I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I am a Mechanical Engineering Doctoral student at Cornell University, where I have also earned my Masters of Science and Bachelor of Science in the same field. My research has been focused on the field of MEMS, specifically piezoelectrically based radio frequency communication devices. In the past, I have participated in after school tutoring programs for middle school children, mentored in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program, and taught engineering concepts to junior graduate students. Physics and math are my preferred subjects, and I particularly enjoy tutoring physics. I find the ability to explain the natural world through equations beautiful, and I want to pass this appreciation on to students by relating concepts to their experiences and giving useful real world examples. I believe the key to tutoring physics and math is not rote memorization but ensuring the student understands and identifies fundamental principles behind each problem. I will first work with each student on simple problems to develop familiarity and intuition. Then, we will approach more complex problems which tie several concepts together. Students will learn to approach complex problems by breaking them down into principles they are familiar with. I believe education is invaluable to improving quality of life, and whether or not students go on to STEM fields, the problem solving skills they will develop will help them think more critically in all other facets of their life
