I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy involves a lot of patience; patience for the tutor and the tutee. When you have difficulty understanding a subject, having patience with yourself can greatly increase your chances of having an “aha” moment.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

First of we should introduce ourselves and get a little bit of background. After introductions, I will ask about how they learn things best and what they are having difficulties with.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

You can help a student become an independent learner by teaching them effective note taking skills and improving their study habits. Difficulties in learning can still occur, so if you hit a roadblock, take a break. If you are still having difficulties, seek out a tutor.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

When you are having trouble understanding a subject you can lose motivation. I would help them stay motivated by encouraging them and reminding them that they can overcome this temporary slump.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would try teaching the concept in different ways. Difficulty in learning a skill is often because they were only taught the skill in one way.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Having the student explain the material to you is a good way to make sure a student understands the materials.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

A rise in confidence in a subject occurs naturally as the student understands a subject more.
