Certified Tutor
I'm Aria Hansen, a first-year student majoring in English at Columbia University in the City of New York. I specialize in reading comprehension, language arts, and test prep, in addition to American Sign Language. I love everything from reading and writing to art and music. Being a creative person, although I loved learning, I found it hard to stay engaged with my work when it was taught in a standard way. Therefore, I hope to help my students stay interested in their studies by teaching them in an innovative and interactive manner. I'm passionate about learning, and I want every student to be excited about school.

I love music, art, reading, and fashion. I collect vintage cameras and typewrites, and love wearing vintage clothing as well - antiques are very important to me because I love the history behind them. I also enjoy exploring New York City.

What is your teaching philosophy?
Learning should be fun and exciting, so I want to teach in a creative, innovative way. I want to engage with my students and keep them interested in the tasks at hand, rather than making them a chore.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I think it's important to get to know the student - their interests, hobbies, favorite subjects, and learning styles. Then we can determine how to get the most out of our tutoring sessions.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I think it's important to determine what the student's strengths are, as well as what they need to work on. From there, we can hone in on what studying or learning style works best for them, and they can begin to implement those good habits on their own.
