Krishna: Palos Heights tutor
Certified Tutor
Becoming a tutor was not something I initially gave much thought to. When my children were young, I would help them with their homework, but it wasn't until a friend asked me to help her son with biology that I began to pursue this pathway in earnest. My strength is in English, which I majored in as an undergraduate. I love to read. I have a good memory and am also quick with numbers, which are assets when it comes to tutoring math. I have tutored other subjects over the years, and even if I am not immediately familiar with the topic, I am able to go back and review it so that I am prepared to teach. Although I have tutored all grade levels, I love teaching high school students in particular because they are receptive, focused and bring a mature perspective to the table. I am able to link common experiences and anecdotes to the subjects I am teaching to make them more interesting and engaging for the students. I believe that I am good at what I do and that I have the patience to do a good job. I become personally invested in the success of the students and am happy to see them excel. Learning to me is not just about acing an exam or getting perfect grades, it's about retaining and applying the lesson beyond the classroom and that is the more crucial skill in the long run.

What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe that every student has the capacity to learn any subject and given patience and time, the tutor can inspire the student to feel confident about their level of competence in the subject.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would get to know the student by explaining my background and asking about their interests and difficulties they had with the subject material.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I would explain the lesson and give them several examples to practice with and then give them notes to review and supplementary material to practice on their own time.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
By giving them positive feedback and noting the progress they have made so far.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Continue to review the concept or skill with them in various different ways, with extra practice, additional explanations and added source material, drawings, etc.
