Cuong

Certified Tutor

I graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelor's in Biomedical Engineering. My experience with tutoring comes from helping my younger cousins (ranging from elementary to high school) in their school work. My favorite subjects, and the subjects that I tutor, are math and the sciences because I enjoy working with numbers. My teaching philosophy is help students understand the theory/concept rather than rote memorizationalthough there are times when being able to memorize details are important. When I tutor I like to break the problem down into smaller steps which helps my students understand the material better. On my free time I like to go to the gym, hang out with friends, and practice programming.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Before I start teaching a student, I like to get to know a little bit about them and their strengths and weaknesses. This lets me know what we need to work on. My teaching style involves breaking the problems down into little steps and patiently going through each steps. If the student doesn't understand it the first few times, I will come at it from a different angle in order to change their perspective.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would get to know a little bit about my student and determine their strengths and weaknesses. This allows me to find a starting point that my student is comfortable and confident in.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would use examples that are relevant to them to make it more fun and easy to understand.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Make the subject fun by using examples that are relevant to them (i.e. movies, games, etc.).

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I will set goals and milestones for my students to get them on track.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would test students over the theory/concepts rather than being able to memorize minute details.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By starting at a point that the student is comfortable with and then progressively challenge the student.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Practice problems such as homework, quizzes, and problem sets that I put together.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By teaching them good study habits.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Getting to know the topics that the student is good at and the topics that the student is struggling on and going from there.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By looking at a student's performance and asking what the student desires.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Depending on the student's need, I can change the way the materials are delivered, work with the student for an extended period of time, etc.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Reading out loud and asking questions for an active reading session.
