Certified Tutor

Teaching and learning have been important pursuits in my life for over twenty years. I believe strongly in the rewards and benefits of lifelong learning. I put this principle into practice by successfully completing a PhD in modern European history and by participating in educational pastimes, such as serving as a volunteer with my local historical societies. As a teacher I encourage and support the academic goals of all curious or hesitant learners. Pupils who begin to work with me can expect to enjoy their courses of study and to develop a love of learning. Whether working with students in elementary school or with college undergraduates, I always strive to make learning dynamic, vibrant and welcoming. My aim is to ensure that all students develop a confident mastery and an appreciation of their subject. Students will become eager to learn and they will carry this value with them throughout their academic life.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Students learn best when they are having fun while learning.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would get to know a new student by having a casual discussion about their hobbies and interests before designing a series of learning objectives.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

A student will become an independent learner by building self-confidence and by becoming interested and excited by the subject matter.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Students remain motivated when they experience a sense of achievement and when they enjoy their studies.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

All students learn at different speeds and through different methods. Successful mastery of a subject may require a student to experiment with varied techniques at their own particular pace.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Reading comprehension is contingent upon understanding, engagement and enjoyment. Asking questions while holding informal discussions about a text will help to boost a reader's level of comprehension.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would get a student excited and engaged by sharing my own enthusiasm and by demonstrating the day-to-day benefits and enjoyments that can be derived from studying a particular subject.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

In addition to standard forms of assessment, such as quizzes and written submissions, informal discussions and oral exams will help to ensure a student's proficiency.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

A student will build his/her own self-confidence by experiencing accomplishment and achievement. I will always reward improvements by bestowing praise and by granting appropriate accolades whenever possible.
