What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Evaluate the student's proficiency in the subject with a general test covering a range of topics. With this, I can evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each student to see what needs the most work and practice.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Hard work, practice, and a good teacher will make anything learnable.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Instilling good habits and creating a strong learning foundation are what makes successful independent learners.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I believe that all students have an innate willingness to learn. It is my job to stimulate that willingness to help them grow, along with preventing the frustration that could limit the motivation.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would first make sure that I am being straightforward in my teaching, and that my lesson plan is adequate. After that, I would try and explain again the concepts that the student has difficulty learning in different ways. Failing that, I would go back to make sure that the basics are fully covered before proceeding.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Being patient with the student when difficulty approaches and being positive are the most successful strategies I have found when working with a student.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Help them learn with patience, and make sure not to rush them into making mistakes.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would try and establish the subject to their lives, and hope to demonstrate the importance of the subject, along with the possibilities.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

If the student understands the material, then I would focus on improving their speed on solving problems before moving forward to the next subject.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Start slowly and build up the knowledge. Confidence will come as the student becomes more knowledgeable.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Preliminary testing is my go-to method when evaluating where a student struggles and needs the most work on. I would then observe them to see what the best way to teach them is.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

People learn in different ways, and I will do my best to fit my lesson plan into their best way of learning.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Depending on the subject, I would use more physical objects and models when I am establishing the concept. Afterwards, I would graduate to just using pencil/paper.
