Tania
Certified Tutor
Hi. I'm an IB Diploma holder, and received my Bachelor degree in Science (Biology/Premed) from the CUNY College of Staten Island. I am bilingual in the Spanish language as well and have been tutoring students from elementary school up to college for over 8 years. As a professional tutor, my goal is to make sure that a student learns to study and learn the smart way. To do so take the following steps: Assessing, Reinforcing, and Applying. Since no student is completely unfamiliar to the subject he is struggling with, I go ahead and assess the depth of his knowledge of that subject. From that assessment, I address what needs to be reinforced, sort of like putting pieces of a puzzle together. All this using the already known Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic (VAK) learning styles.

What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy is to Assess, Reinforce, and Apply. I help students achieve way better by teaching them how to study the smart way.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I greet students and ask them about something positive that happened to them on that day or what their hobbies are. I then ask them to tell me about their academic history
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I teach them how to study smart by making more use of technology, books, flashcards, educational videos, and hands on activities.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I put myself in his shoes. I went through the same frustration, but I also let him know that I made it through, and having a positive attitude is what counts. Do not take your eyes off your goal. Ever.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Go over it as many times as he needs to. Using visuals, auditory, and kinesthetic approaches.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I assess their learning and reading styles, and follow up from there. All students are different
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Using my Assessing, Reinforcing, and Applying (ARA) strategy has been very helpful.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
There are ALWAYS interesting facts about every subject that can get a student engaged and excited about it. I know quite a lot. :)
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Have the student apply the topics that we have reinforced during the tutoring session.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I always make positive remarks, no matter how slow the progress. Each student is different, but has the capability to achieve academically
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I assess the depth of their knowledge in a subject or topic, and then follow up from there.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I ask them what teaching style fits their needs best, whatever time is good for them to be tutored, and at what pace.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Paper, pen, pencil, stencils, calculators, videos, practice tests, open-ended questions, multiple choice questions, drawings, acronyms, models, and more !
