Laura
Certified Tutor
I am a recent graduate of Adrian College with a Bachelor's degree in Arts Management. I have had experience as a tutor in both college and high school and wish to continue tutoring in my professional life as preparation to teach English in the Peace Corps. Because of this interest, the subjects I tutor in are English, Writing, Reading&Comprehension, and ACT prep. I have a strong passion for lifelong learning that I believe I can share with my students. When I'm not tutoring, I love to see live music at concerts and shows around the area.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Introduce myself to the student and explain about my background, then have them do the same for themselves. Move into what is challenging them, and try to determine the best ways to teach them.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Teaching the reason why things are right or wrong answers, not just why the correct answer is the best choice to inspire learning and future understanding.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Taking short breaks to keep the energy high can be helpful in longer tutoring sessions. In shorter sessions, focusing on questions the student feels more confident in between harder questions can keep motivation going to answer each problem.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Try to teach it in as many alternative ways as possible until one clicks with the student.
