I've always enjoyed learning about math, science, and engineering. When I became a Math Center Tutor at the university I attended, my passion for teaching mathematics equaled my passion for the subject itself. During those last two years at college, I spent several hours a week tutoring in subjects ranging from Pre-Calculus to Linear Algebra. My weekly tutoring shifts were a mixture of walk-in sessions and private appointments.
What do I get out of tutoring? I owe much of my academic success to the professors who taught and inspired me. Having the opportunity to have a positive influence and to make a difference in a student's path in education is very rewarding. In general, I believe that identifying how you can help others, and set your heart into doing so, is one of the most satisfying things in life.
My particular methods for tutoring revolve around tailoring my guidance and explanations to the student's learning style. If I know the solution to the problem at a glance, I will not simply demonstrate the solution. If the solution isn't so obvious (perhaps a tricky word problem), we'll work through it together. Either way, I think it's essential for the student to understand the concepts behind the subject, rather than idly performing the computations needed to arrive at an answer.
