I love math. I had a fantastic math teacher when I was in high school who helped me realize my potential in math. I am a middle school math teacher today because of her inspiration. Being a teacher makes me further realize that it is very difficult to give individual attention to students in large classes. I would love to help you in your math subject whether your goal is to pass the class or if you want to challenge yourself.

I have a bachelor's degree in Childhood Education from St. John's University and a master's degree in Special Education from the College of Staten Island. I have since taken several other classes to extend my license to teach middle school mathematics.

I have been a math tutor since 2009 working with students of all ages from pre-K to college level. My favorite subjects to tutor include high school level math because it brings with it various challenges and applications. I also enjoy tutoring with younger students because I get to use manipulatives and pictures to help students understand the math.

I believe students learn best when I meet them at their level and determine their learning style. Everyone learns in different ways and my first goal would be to find out your learning style.

What is your teaching philosophy?

People learn best when they are met at their level and are taught using their personal learning style.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I will ask them their interests and hobbies and learn their learning style. This may include a short questionnaire if they do not already know how they learn best.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Independent learning includes learning specific study skills as well as learning how to access information on their own.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would find out what they are having trouble with, specifically. Sometimes, students have trouble with higher level math because they are lacking in some basic math skills.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Reading comprehension is important, even in math. I would use close reading strategies to enhance their ability to understand word problems and be able to answer them.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Repeated practice problems as well as giving students questions where they would have to use the content in a different context.
