What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would ask the student to repeat what he or she knows about the subject.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I will commend a student when he or she gets something correct. And tell them some ideas on what I know about the subject so that they are familiar with the background of the topic.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I will ask a student questions to see where I feel the student is in the learning process of the subject, and then work from there.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I can adapt specifically to each student by working to their basic levels and needs. I can bring games for younger students, or suggest reading material for the older students.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

During the tutoring session, we will use the texts the student is working in, books from the library, blank notebooks and cards, as well as flashcards.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is that teaching and learning go hand in hand. They can be accomplished successfully if the teacher and student work together.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a first session with a student, I will introduce myself and tell them a little bit about myself, and ask them to do so, too. We will start with the students daily assignments or what they are having trouble with.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Students can become independent learners by understanding the importance of reading and writing on their own.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would help a student to stay motivated by commending them when they get something correct, and keeping the tutoring session relaxed.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would try to understand exactly what the student is misunderstanding, and then teach those concepts first.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I do things like read to the student, have them read passages to me, and then interpret them in their own words, or write something creative to a fun question that I ask.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

The best strategy is to share. A student can share a little about themselves, what they like to learn, and even say what they are having trouble with.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

A student should understand that once they learn the subject, they will have more fun with it. And, I'd keep the tutoring session informative, yet relaxed.
