Subha
Certified Tutor
With more than 10 years of tutoring experience, I am adept in mathematics (elementary, middle school, and high school) and science. My on-the-job experience has also afforded me a well-rounded skill set, including first-rate communication and presentation skills. I excel at multitasking the multiple learning needs of each student, developing materials, reporting on progress, and managing educational time.
I love playing with my three children and working with them. I like to keep up with my own reading and writing when I can, and I also volunteer to teach SAT mathematics (a subject in which I have a geeks need to study and learn more about all the time!). I have a new-found interest in art after teaching "Learning to Look" for my son's class. I've been known to race my students to finish math puzzles, I read whenever I can, and I like to participate in warrior dash races. In addition to my experience and personal qualities, I have a solid educational foundation and a passion for tutoring.

What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe that learner-oriented teaching promotes learning that is both purposeful and enduring.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
As a teacher, it is my responsibility to know who my learner is, and what kind of knowledge and understanding he/she brings in. So my first session will be to relate to the student.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I will first let the student come up with a solution. Then we discuss the possibilities and derive a solution.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
By demonstrating curiosity and passion about a subject.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
We work over it again & try to understand why is the skill or concept difficult. Then we break down the skill or concept further to easier parts & take it step by step, always making sure the concept is understood as we move forward.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Reading comprehension could be resolved by helping the student make connections or asking questions, creating visual images, helping make an inference, helping to read what's important, and monitoring progress.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I feel it always works to keep it real. I try my best to keep the session entertaining and challenging at the same time. Most importantly, in the long run, fostering independence is the best gift a teacher can inculcate.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Relating it to more fun and interesting topics. Breaking it down into understandable small units so that it is not too much to take on at one time.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I try to acknowledge student's accomplishments, however small they are. I try to create an opportunity for the student to build on their strengths. The focus is to do better than what they did before.
