Certified Tutor

One of the most important skills necessary to being a tutor is the ability to convey difficult topics in a tangible, easy-to-understand manner. That is a skill I possess in spades. I have the drive necessary in order to make sure that each student I work with gains a mastery over their subjects, and always try to use real-world examples in order to ensure that my students are able to understand even more complex concepts. I am both patient and eager to help each of my students, and will always go the extra mile.

What is your teaching philosophy?

To explain things in a way that can be understood and relatable.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would like to see exactly what the student needs help in, and see what they know so far.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By giving examples of varying difficulty, one can see how it is done for the simplest problem, and for harder problems.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By giving them practice problems of topics we previously covered for reinforcement, and by encouraging them that we are making progress.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would first explain what is the reason behind the concept, then see if they can explain it to me. Then I would give simple problems, and build up in difficulty.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would ask them to explain what is being meant.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

To constantly give practice problems. Practice makes perfect.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

By relating it to other subjects or topics they enjoy.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Constant practice problems of covered material, both current and previous.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By allowing them to explain it to me after they have mastery.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I see what they have problems in, and gauge what they know by either explaining or doing simple problems.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

We start with basics and build on complexity.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Paper, pencil, calculator, Skype, or anything else the student requires.
