Certified Tutor

I just finished up a graduate program and moved to Boston, where I am currently interning and pondering the next step in my career. I am a self-proclaimed "audio nerd" and do freelance work within sound design and audio production. I really enjoy the intricacies of language and would be very interested in delving into a graduate/doctorate program in German Studies eventually, as I have a BA in German from Bates College. Right now, I am studying for the GRE and applying to other grad programs in that area.

I have enjoyed working with and mentoring children and young adults all of my life. Throughout high school and college I spent my summers working at summer camps, with children aged 6-16. Most recently I worked at AYF Merrowvista in the summer of 2014, where I led teenagers on adventure trips throughout New England. I particularly enjoy mentoring and watching children grow into their identities as they grow up and would really relish the opportunity to help your child not only develop their skills as a student but grow into a personable and confident young adult.

What is your teaching philosophy?

It's important to foster an environment where the student feels comfortable asking whatever questions they have, and I try my best to create such an environment - that way learning can take place in a more organic and less forced manner.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I will teach them self-study skills (such as flashcards, setting reminders, etc.) in order to foster independence.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Making exercises fun and relevant.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would try multiple different methods (audio, visual, kinetic) to see which approach would work best for that certain skill.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would first try and identify what specifically they are struggling with (semantics, vocabulary, etc.), and then go from there with more specific exercises.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I do my best to create a comfortable environment with the student - once they are relaxed they feel more confident in asking questions.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would informally quiz them throughout the session and then check in with them directly to see if they had any reservations about anything.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

It would depend on the learning style of the student - most likely a combination of text, drawings, pictures, diagrams, etc.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

First, I would get to know them on a personal level to break the ice and form a connection. Next, I would ask them what their goals were and what they wanted to gain from our tutoring sessions.
