I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Adam: Plymouth tutor

Certified Tutor

I attended Florida International University. I received my Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and my Master of Arts in Linguistics. As a graduate teaching assistant, I tutored for all areas of linguistics and I taught Writing & Rhetoric as well. Since graduation, I taught English as a foreign language in Japan at five junior high schools over the course of few years. More recently, I have been taking the prerequisites, e.g. Chemistry, Physics, Statistics and Human Anatomy/Physiology, required to apply to Doctorate of Physical Therapy programs for the fall of 2016. I am well-acquainted with and adept in instruction for various subjects. However, my favorites subjects are math and writing/literature/languages, albeit the latter is not conventionally thought of as one subject. In essence, I love to solve puzzles; each aforementioned subject entails figuring out how the constituents interact with one another while abiding by specific rules and, sometimes, exceptions.

Through divergent thinking and debate of dialogic points of view, students are pushed outside their comfort zone and are pushed to think for themselves. To teach is to learn and I encourage my students to teach themselves, teach each other and to teach me. My experience enables me to better understand different approaches to engage students and their diverse learning style via reprisal of ideas, verbal reflection and progression to meaningful conclusions. I believe clear communication of goals and expectations are integral to the tutor-student relationship. Working for a diverse group of students will allow me to become more proficient in imparting knowledge and skills for whichever subject comes our way.

In my free time, I like to read pieces of writing by authors such Milan Kundera, Haruki Murakami, Wallace Stevens and Alan Moore, listen to music by artists such as Bon Iver, Iron & Wine, and Sakanaction, and be outside so I can run, swim and perpetually look like I am about to fall off a paddle board.

What is your teaching philosophy?

To teach is to learn, and I encourage my students to teach themselves, teach each other, and to teach me.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Exchange greetings and self-introductions, go over the task at hand, review the student's knowledge of the topic, and work together towards progress.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

My goal is to help students feel more comfortable and achieve their highest level of success with their particular topics. When students can explain and/or show how they would efficiently solve a diverse range of problems, I know they've become independent learners.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

In addition to remaining positive and using tactful humor, I like to ask students what drives them and what kind of person they want to be in the future. Then, we talk about and remind ourselves what steps they can take to get there.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would (metaphorically) take a step back and reevaluate my approach to his/her individual learning style, discuss what they understand and don't understand, and try alternative ways of explanation.
