I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I am a currently a student. During college, I studied biology and economics and minored in math. I love math and the sciences and those are my favorite subjects to tutor. There is nothing that makes me happier than seeing my students explain a concept that was previously confusing for them. My teaching strategy relies heavily on understanding my students' learning styles and catering tutoring sessions to best fit how my students like to learn. When working through practice problems, I enjoy using the "teach-back" method to enhance repetition and to ensure that my students really understand the concepts.

When I am not tutoring, I enjoy baking desserts, reading novels, and sketching cartoons.

What is your teaching philosophy?

See one, do one, teach one. I rely heavily on the "teach-back" method and always ask students to explain problems to me.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

During the first session, I will likely spend at least 5 minutes understanding how my student likes to learn and to get a better idea about their learning style (e.g. visual, audio, etc.).

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I always encourage students to first try the problem by themselves as I listen to their thought process. In addition, at the end of the session, I will likely ask the student to brainstorm resources they can reference when there are no tutors available.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would encourage students to explain what they do understand about the particular subject area and build new concepts on top of what they already understand. This way, students acknowledge that there are some familiar concepts and hopefully become motivated to learn more concepts. Lastly, I will always provide encouraging remarks during the tutoring session.
