I know exactly how it feels to be discouraged and/or behind in a subject. I've experienced my fair share of struggles in various courses. I also know how relieving it is when you find someone that can help you overcome your challenges. With that said, my main goal is to provide that relief and confidence to any struggling students I work with. There is truly nothing more rewarding for me than to know that I have helped a student conquer their academic fears. I could never be satisfied, as a tutor, until I know that the student is not just satisfied, but elated about their improved scholastic performance.
I have a bachelor's degree in exercise physiology with clusters in chemistry and nutrition. I completed this undergraduate program from Brigham Young University-Idaho. While there, I worked as an English tutor. Some of my responsibilities were to edit essays, teach valuable test taking and study skills, and to help improve reading comprehension. Soon thereafter, I began tutoring elementary math, reading, and writing. As part of responsibilities for this job, I would travel to private schools around the Las Vegas valley and teach reading and mathematics lessons to small student groups. I'm currently employed as a reading, writing, and mathematics tutor for a private Jewish school here in Las Vegas.
I have always had a passion for the English language and writing; consequently, I enjoy helping others gain that same enthusiasm but teaching reading, writing, and general English. I also love tutoring anatomy and physiology, as well as basic biology. Due to my passion in biology and the sciences, I want to pursue a career in dental medicine. I recently took the Dental Admission Test (DAT) and have applied to dental schools. Because the DAT material is still fresh on my mind, I would love to help teach various methods and techniques needed to conquer this test.
My wife and I just had our first baby (boy) on August 7th and I'm loving being a dad. During my free time I love to exercise in any way I can. In particular, I like lifting weights, playing basketball, football, and tennis. I also ran cross country and played volleyball in high school.
What I want most from this job is to create meaningful, enjoyable tutoring sessions. I think it is important to incorporate fun exercises into tutor sessions, as well as setting goals in order to achieve greater understanding of the subject matter.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I think it's crucial that I, as the tutor, not only teach the material, but have the student teach the material to me. In other words, in order for the material to be well understood, it needs to be fully discussed by both the teacher and the student. So technically, everyone is a teacher and everyone is a student. Lastly, each tutoring session should be enjoyable. Whether an enjoyable session is achieved by playing a game, completing some kind of puzzle, or just having good conversation, an enjoyable tutoring session is an effective one.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know the student. Figure out their likes and dislikes. Ask what they like about the subject and what they dislike about the subject. Determine what is particularly difficult about the subject matter. Finally, answer any questions that the student might have about me and/or the material, and then go from there.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Find ways to make the material interesting to the student by giving real-world applications and fun analogies. Also, explain how rewarding it is to make reasonable goals and achieve them.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Remind them that an increasing confidence and knowledge of the subject will only make their academic life easier. Also, give incentives to the students if they accomplish their goals.
