I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

My personal mission is to ensure every student that I teach gets one step closer to achieving his/her academic goals.

While I specialize in tutoring Economics, Accounting, Business, and Finance, these fields also qualify me for tutoring a broad range of Mathematics courses (Algebra 1, Middle-School Math, etc), given their significant overlap.

I know the above subjects can be dry (and may even put some people to sleep!) at times, but I have an intense passion for them, and hope that I can share that passion by teaching you some of their exciting real-world applications (stock markets, global currencies, etc) in addition to your core curriculum. I try to keep things light and make learning as fun as I can! I have experience as a teaching assistant in graduate school/undergrad, as well as years of private tutoring experience across a wide range of topics.

My academic background (Master/Bachelor degrees in Economics), professional exam experience (Passed CFA Levels I and II Exams, as well as Series 7, 63 86, and 87 exams), and on-the-job training (Equity Research) have provided my past tutoring clients with a unique perspective of integrating theoretical knowledge into real-world application. With a strong background in finance and economics, I have tutored many students interested in careers in financial services, and believe I can help younger students simply looking to master the fundamentals of intermediate mathematics.

I ask for feedback at the end of every tutoring session, encourage questions on my teaching methods and material coverage, and include a free 10 minute discussion with each lesson for practical applications (e.g., stock market implications, tax policies, etc.) if so desired and applicable.

Please feel free to reach out with any questions you may have. I am here to provide you with the best possible tutoring service you can get!

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe in taking a team approach, where both the tutor and student share a mutual goal of improving the student's knowledge in a specific subject. I have found that this encourages an open dialogue, typically in a question and answer format, which will ultimately get to the core of where improvement is needed. I also highly believe in the use of metaphors and analogies to help simplify, and thus explain, key concepts.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

The first session will typically include 30 minutes of getting to know the student, his/her personal interests, favorite subjects, and why they sought out tutoring. Then I will introduce my approach, expertise, and goals for the student. With the remaining time, we will delve into the study material.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Teaching students the art of critical thinking is extremely important, in my view, and something I will attempt to implement in my lessons. The more a student learns to think for themselves, the easier they will be able to apply principles, theories, and laws on their own.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

For dry subjects such as accounting, economics, math, and finance, I use metaphors and real-life examples as frequently as possible to help keep subject material interesting (specifically weaving in examples close to the interests of the student).
