I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

Currently a junior studying Philosophy and Environmental Studies at Eckerd College. I've been working with students for about six years now and have experience with elementary, middle school, high school, and college levels. From the fall of 2012 to the spring of 2013 I tutored two sixth grade twins four afternoons a week. One student had an attention disorder, so as I helped in any and all subjects I also worked to maintain a focused study environment. Summer of 2014 I worked as a camp counselor and nature specialist at Camp James in Newport Beach CA, switching between the two positions weekly. As camp counselor, I was in charge of a group of around fifteen 10 year olds at a time, supervising them in activities and ensuring everybody was a happy camper. The other weeks, where I was the nature specialist, I came up with programs for kids from 4 to 14, ensuring that the 4 to 6 year olds had different, and just as interesting, activities as the 7 through 9 year olds and the 10 through 14 year olds. In the spring of 2015, I worked as an AVID tutor at St. Petersburg High School were I was working with freshmen, sophomore, and junior students. The AVID program encourages students to help each other through problems through a socratic-based discussion method which I helped implement, along with helping the students work through problems they were stuck on or confused about. Also in the spring, I began a job as a logic tutor at my college which I continue this fall. In this position, I set up weekly office hours for students to come in for help with quizzes, homework, or general subject confusion.

What is your teaching philosophy?

If a student has the right tools and the drive to try their best, that student will be successful. Sometimes the right tools aren't always obvious, so asking for help can have immeasurable benefit. Even professional musicians take lessons. If you want to get better at something, you should know that there's always somebody who knows something you don't yet, and then you've got to find that somebody and ask them for help.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a first session, it's important that we get to know each other. I want to know what classes you're taking and which ones you're having a hard time in. I want to be able to look at your homework, quizzes, and tests from those classes where you struggled, and get an idea of where there's the problem in understanding. But I also want to get to know you're life outside of that really tough class or classes. I want to know where you excel in school, if you're on a sports team, or in the band, or if you love being in the school theater productions. It's also important that I understand your goals. Where is your ideal grade and GPA, and how are we going to get there? If you're a college student, or perhaps a very ambitious middle school student, I'd love to know where your dream college is, or the career that you're looking to get into someday. There's a lot of ways to connect the things you're interested in to the things you're not, and we'll work on finding those.
