Hello! You've come to the right person for your academic needs. My specialties include college prep, AP prep, SAT prep, foreign language (Mandarin Chinese), and homework help. I have had experience teaching in tutoring agencies, after-school programs, in-school programs, non-profit settings, etc. I also have background knowledge in educational/developmental psychology, so I know what curriculums are out there and what educational approaches to take in tutoring sessions. A little about me- I am a graduate of Duke University, with a major in Psychology and minors in Art History and English. Currently, I am an MBA student studying Finance at NYU Stern. What is your teaching philosophy?
Focus on strengths. Combating test prep and homework frustrations with real-life applications.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Figuring out what the problems are and coming up with a specific game plan to solve them.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Guidance but not reliance.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Letting students know that it will take time to see improvements. Long-term success is a gradual process.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Find a way to approach the concept through a more relatable way. Students should not only be able to "get it" but also to experience it.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Practice and breaking things down into smaller pieces. Large chunks of words scare me as well.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Real-life application. Education needs to be practical and usable.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Relating the subject to the student's overall goals and plans.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Review, practice, review, practice.

Noticing the small improvements and sharing them with the student.

Look at past performance.
