Samuel: Gravesend tutor

Certified Tutor

I am a math major in my senior year, studying at Ottawa University. I began tutoring students in high school through an after school volunteer program. I have also done some freelance tutoring, served as a bilingual aid for Spanish speaking students working on their GED/HSED, and tutored at Madison Area Technical College in Madison, WI. I currently tutor grade school mathematics through calculus. Math has always been my favorite subject to tutor, I have a firm belief that everyone has what it takes to be good in mathematics. My goal is to help make sure math is something that everyone I work with is comfortable using, rather than a topic that people shy away from. My tutoring style is one that builds on what the student has been exposed to, while focusing on reinforcing and expanding the areas the student is confident in.

In my free time I enjoy exploring new restaurants, hearing live bands, going out dancing, reading, finding new things I haven't explored, and spending time with my friends and children.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Everyone has the ability to learn something new; it is just a matter of finding out how to get things to resonate with each person, while understanding that each person is different.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Practice and repetition always helps. I also try to explain things in different ways.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

A first session is usually a combination of getting to know each other, talking out what areas of concern the student would like to focus on, and working on some problems to help lay the foundation for future sessions.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I often start by taking turns with the student in explaining how to solve a problem and taking notes after each session. In between sessions, I encourage the student to work independently and come to our next session with questions.
