Arturo: Lower East Side tutor

Certified Tutor

I am a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland. I received my Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts with a concentration in Painting in 2002. I'm also currently pursuing a teaching credential in the visual arts at California State University Los Angeles.

I started my tutoring career as a volunteer tutor in 2000. From then on, education has been a passion of mine. For the past eight years, I've been a substitute teacher with the Los Angeles Unified School District, where I've had the pleasure of teaching for extended periods in both classroom and tutoring settings. Through my work in Los Angeles public schools as well as private tutoring sessions, I've cultivated a tutoring philosophy that is oriented toward student-centered problem solving and confidence building. Under my tutoring, a student will develop their own approach to academic success that will build their confidence and resilience in school, allowing them to tackle ever more difficult subjects with perseverance. I help students achieve this goal by providing them with logical and structured support along with kind and steady encouragement. If a student is having trouble with a subject, I am patient in providing them with alternative methods of solving their problems. My goal as a tutor is always to help a student understand a problem enough to solve it themselves. This method allows a student to develop their own learning style and build confidence in their own abilities. My experience in the classroom has given me the tools to teach students of all backgrounds and abilities.
I'm available to tutor Elementary math and English along with the following secondary school subjects: Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, English 6th-12th, US and World History, Visual Art and Art History. I can also tutor in Photoshop, video editing, and 3D rendering programs. My favorite subjects to teach are those that have to do with the arts and with English, helping students develop their ability to engage with their world in a creative way.

In addition to being a dedicated educator, I'm also a professional visual artist. I've shown my work internationally in museums and galleries. I bring the same care and mindfulness to my work in education that I do to my work in the visual arts, my goal is to cultivate knowledge and a safe and encouraging space for ideas and creative problem solving to blossom.
