Tutoring review by Michelle in Manvel, TX
The first student had a writing assignment for her field trip. She worked on answering interview questions and she also edited her writing. I gave her a 2nd spelling puzzler similar to what we worked on last week. The second student also had math word problems, still working with multiples, finding, LCD and LCM for fraction problems; she practiced double digit multiplying as well. She worked on correcting errors in her last chapter math test. She can do the algebraic process well in all her problems. Evaluating what is wanted and determining which application to use is more difficult; much of what she was doing hadn't been reviewed very well or very consistently in school. Most the problems require systems of equations solving using the elimination and substitution methods, in order to solve for both unknown variables. We reviewed slope and y-intercept and the equation for a line: y=mx +b. Defining what he "m" and the "b" represent. In her class they term the "m" , slope, as the growth factor. We ended with practicing more about unit conversions. We will continue to work on that area because it involves working with metric units, thus decimals, and multipliers a lot. Good practice for her.

The student and I worked on graphing the log function with transformations. She has a good handle on the material. Our next session will be on Monday at 4:00 pm to help her prepare for her test on Tuesday.

We continued to review his math homework during the sessions, now dealing with simplifying rational functions. He finished his work efficiently and we discussed his motivations for success in math, and in academia in general. We will continue to work on his organizational skills as well as short-term goals in mathematics.

The student and I went over completing the square and the quadratic formula. I gave him more advanced problems to complete, so he will be better prepared for his exam. I also gave him a mini-quiz to complete in the allotted time. He is doing a great job at attacking problems and is becoming more confident in his algebra skills every week.

The concept covered was predominately over the Pythagorean theorem. With triangles, the student needed to remember the properties of a triangle such as all angles add to 180 degrees, an equilateral triangle has equal side lengths and angles, etc. We also went over the shortcut method to finding a side length or the hypotenuse of a special angled triangle like 45-45-90 or 30-60-90 triangle instead of having to do the Pythagorean theorem all the time (a good way to double check if you are correct). She definitely started to improve using these special properties of these right triangles. She is always ready to work and learn when she comes to the session, which makes the session run easier.

Tutoring review by Peter in Manvel, TX
First, we reviewed the passage-based reading homework. Then, we covered topics from the statistics, probability, & data analysis and numbers & operations packet such as made-up functions, how to calculate probability, mean, median, mode, properties of integers, word problems, squares and square roots, factors, multiples, and remainders. I asked the students to do two passage-based reading assignments and all the problems from the two math packets in topics we've covered for next time.
