The student has a test in pre-calculus tomorrow, so we worked on her study guide. Many of the problems required a basic knowledge of the graphs of common functions, so I recommended that she study those tonight. She already knew that they would be important, but she has to sit down and memorize them to best help herself on the test and later in class. We also worked on how to tell if a graph has been shifted vertically or horizontally based on how the equation was altered. She is much better at using a table of values to determine the function; she correctly answered all of the problems on her study guide of that type.

We went over an old test to prepare for a new test in 2-dimensional kinematics. I looked over what the student had done wrong and what had gone right (unit conversions, constant velocity motion). We were able to correct all of the problems, then I created a difficult problem for her to work on over the weekend.

I started the session by meeting the student and her mom. We then discussed her needs as far as math. Her mom wants us to work on time and money problems and word problems. I had already sent along a diagnostic test, which she had completed. I reviewed that prior to the session to see what other things she needed to cover. Once we got going on math, I reviewed fractions (ASMD), mixed numbers, and improper fractions. She did well on all of those. We then learned converting fractions to decimals and rounding. Finally, we covered word problems. One small thing that held her up on the test was not knowing standard measurements (# of inches in a yard, etc.). I am going to send her flashcards based on the diagnostic test and try to find flashcards for imperial measurements to send along to her as well. We scheduled the next session.

We did mostly math this session because I feel that is where we need to focus our energy over the next couple of weeks. It is very important for the student to study the material I give her, the methods I teach her, and also the additional practice materials available. The more practice and exposure she has to the relevant concepts for the test, the better.

The student did several Logic Games sections in preparation for our session today. The bulk of our time was spent on one game in particular, the dreaded "Millville subzones" game. We also devoted time to the subject of if-and-only-if rules in logic games and how to sketch them out.

Today the student and I worked on improper and mixed fractions. We worked on converting one to the other. After a few practice problems, he did great; he even started dancing and humming while he was doing the problems. This was a sign for me that he is comfortable and confident with what he was doing. He got all his work completed today. Today's session was a great success.
