The student and I discussed common periodic trends (atomic radius, ionization radius, effective nuclear charge, etc.) After going over the concepts as well as a number of practice problems, it seems like she understood the reasons WHY the trends are the way they are. I also told her about Fe and Cr being exceptions to Hund's Rule, in that they have half-filled 4s subshells.

The student and I reviewed for her History test (Antebellum) and outlined her document-based questions essay. I also edited her essay via email and Google docs.

The student and I covered concepts and strategies for the math and science sections of the placement test. For math, we covered a plethora of topics and practice questions ranging from algebra to trigonometry to geometry. For science, we went over timing strategies and trends of questions that are typically asked during the section. She admitted that science and math were her two weakest sections, but she did very well in both math and science.

The student and I discussed the similarities and differences between the SAT and ACT essays. We discussed sample outlines for each and how to spend brainstorming time. We practiced the principles discussed by brainstorming outlines and thesis statements for two SAT prompts and two ACT prompts.

Today the student and I assessed her needs and goals for the semester (AP Bio). She is a very bright and dedicated student and is currently grasping the overall concepts very well. A large part of our work together will probably be reviewing concepts and practice problems as well as honing her study skills.
