Tutoring review by Matthew in Woburn, MA
The student and I continued our review of chapter 9 for his upcoming test. Today we focused on geometric sequences (finding nth terms, summations), and using mathematical induction to prove given formulas for the summation of sequences. He did a good job applying his knowledge of arithmetic sequences to similar types of problems with geometric sequences, though he sometimes confused formulas from the two. The mathematical induction proof problems proved to be more of a challenge for him, but that is understandable because this topic is particularly advanced. However, going over how to complete the problems step-by-step, and using notes he copied from class, it eventually clicked and made sense to him. He does well with the complicated algebra contained within the problems - he just needs some explanation and repetition with the logic process of discrete math.

Tutoring review by Kathryn in Woburn, MA
The student and I worked on Chapter 11 from her Algebra text during this session. The topics were logarithmic functions and natural logarithms. Once we wrote out a formula for converting exponential factors into logarithmic factors she did a lot better. The part she needed help with the most was using the concept of natural logarithms to answer questions about compounded interest. After doing two of these problem types and understanding the variable terms it became more clear. This was a lot to cover in one session but we did great because she completed the end of chapter test from the book with ease.

Tutoring review by Pooja in Woburn, MA
Today the student and I continued looking over chapter 3 in the geometry textbook. After going over the different angles he and I moved on to talking about slope. We went over the difference between the point slope and slope intercept formulas and worked problems for both. He was easily able to do these problems when the formula was given but doesn't quite have the point slope formula memorized yet. He was also able to apply finding the slope of a line to problems asking him if two lines were parallel or perpendicular which was great! I assigned him four worksheets to do as homework before our next session on Monday, 2 on material from chapter 1 and two on material from chapter 3. We completed one of the worksheets on chapter 3 together and he was able to answer all the questions correctly and only needed a little assistance on one question.

Tutoring review by Anna in Woburn, MA
The student and I reviewed homework that covered transformations of powers functions, vertical and horizontal stretches/shrinks, vertical and horizontal shifts, as well as the domain, range, increasing/decreasing intervals, symmetry, boundedness, extrema, asymptotes, and end behavior of powers functions. We also reviewed graphing logarithmic functions and rules of logarithms.
