Tutoring review by Zack in Central Falls, RI
The student and I practiced problems that use the product and quotient derivative rules. He needs a little more practice applying these rules to make them stick. He knows them, but he sometimes makes minor mistakes in recalling the formulas. During a couple of the practice problems that were intended to be solved using the quotient rule, the student picked up on a pattern that could be used to solve the problems more easily. That pattern was the chain rule, which hasn't been covered by the class. We discussed the definition of the chain rule and the formal technique for solving it. The last topic we covered was derivatives of trigonometric functions. Here, the student recognized that derivatives of trig functions lend themselves as common circumstances for applying the chain rule. We demonstrated the rules for taking the derivative of sines and cosines graphically and the rule for tangents using the quotient rule. He continues to excel in Calculus. He likes to know why theorems work, and he is quick to pick up on patterns.

We reviewed the material for the student's math test tomorrow on conic sections. The material was relatively new. We focused on breaking down the problems into manageable pieces. I made sure to circle all the important formulas to be memorized, so his solid math skills should carry him through!

We started working on the review sheets for the student's final exam. We practiced using simple substitution to integrate definite and indefinite integrals, working with the hyperbolic trig functions, solving simple separable differential equations, identifying slope fields, solving exponential decay functions, calculating the area between curves, and finding the volumes of solids of revolution around various axes. The student was a little rusty on most of the calc 1 review topics and the first topics of the semester, but he's remembering more of the later topics pretty well. We will be finishing up the review sheet the morning before the exam.

In this session, the student and I did a review of his full length practice test. He has exceeded profoundly in the quantitative section and the reading section has improved greatly. He still seems to be struggling the most with the verbal section. I recommended that he continue to make flashcards of new words and the root words, and in addition he should review the verbal flashcards on the internet application. I suggested that he focus on determining the relationship types in the analogy portion and to avoid being tricked by answer choices by coming up with his own answer first. His great improvements in math and reading have given us time to focus on improving in the verbal section.
