Science Tutoring review by Talia in Cambridge
The student and I continued our discussion of energy from the previous week. We left off on hydroelectric power plants last week, so we picked up here after doing a brief review on what we had covered previously. Again, he had read through the material prior to our sessions which is something that I've now asked him to do for the remainder of our sessions together because it helps exponentially when I am trying to reinforce ideas and work on practice exercises. Today we did some practice problems that he will most likely, if not definitely, see on an upcoming test since this material has very few mathematical concepts in it. We did problems on calculating specific energy and density given efficiency and energy required of an energy conversion system. He did extremely well on these practice problems, and I'd even say better than I've seen him do on any practice problems we've ever done together. I believe that by him reading over the material prior to our sessions, he is much better able to understand the material I teach him and relate it to other ideas in the text. There was just one small section that we did not get through during today's session but he is already almost a full chapter ahead of his class at this point. Next week he may have a homework assignment that we can work on together to get him prepared for an upcoming test.
