Wheeling General Chemistry Tutoring FAQ
General chemistry covers a broad range of topics, mostly serving as an introduction to several different specialized areas under the larger umbrella of chemistry. General chemistry focuses on subjects such as the elements, states of matter, the atom, measurements, acids and bases, electrochemistry, introductory organic chemistry, and more. The topic requires students to use math, understand various reactions, and apply many concepts of matter. Varsity Tutors can help you connect with a talented general chemistry tutor who can guide you through these many areas using a personalized approach. Tutoring can be customized to your needs as a student, helping you acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to master the course's challenging topics and ultimately become highly proficient in the subject material. Since the range of issues is so vast, it can be overwhelming to try and keep up with so many rules, formulas, and principles, which is why experienced tutors are here to give you a step-by-step approach, handling one concept at a time, at your own pace. Additionally, tutors can help frame a holistic approach that connects the many topics together in a way that makes the most sense. The goal of general chemistry tutoring is to assist in understanding the various concepts individually, as well as the bigger picture. You can feel confident knowing that you are getting the best help available. Each tutor has been carefully selected and screened by a team of professionals. You will be assigned a tutor who is knowledgeable and professional.
The tutor you choose can guide you through the elements and the most important trends of the periodic table, help you work through the differences between solids, liquids, and gases, teach you how to distinguish the differences between ionic and covalent bonds, or thoroughly review the specifics of solutions and mixtures. Some general chemistry courses dip into more specific areas including thermodynamics, organic chemistry, electrochemistry, biochemistry, and more, and your tutor can help you work through those fields as well. Whatever subject area you are struggling with most, your tutor can aid you in overcoming it. Tutoring is not only for when you are struggling. Your tutor can also help you if you are trying to boost your grade to get into the college of your dreams or make the honor roll or dean's list.
The benefit of working with a talented private tutor is that he or she can modify the lesson plan to fit your personal learning style and needs. Your tutor can carefully determine the areas in which you demonstrate mastery as well as those in which you could benefit from additional practice. Your tutor will take the time to get to know you on a personal level, which will give them the chance to learn your strengths and weaknesses. This can allow you to receive the most efficient and purposeful sessions possible. This one-on-one approach allows for a more customized method that puts the focus on you as an individual student, rather than a standardized method that is made to apply to an entire class of diverse students. Whether you need to spend your time on only a few select topics or are looking for help across the entire scope of the class, an experienced tutor can help you meet your needs. There are two choices for tutoring sessions, in person and online. When choosing the in-person method, you can decide to meet your tutor in your home or just about any public place you prefer. For those who are too busy or just not comfortable meeting in person, online tutoring is offered through a live platform. Call your local Varsity Tutors office today and allow our directors to help you connect with just the right tutor, so you can set up your first general chemistry tutoring session!

Recent Wheeling General Chemistry Tutoring Session Notes
The student and I reviewed electrochemistry. We defined voltaic and electrolytic cells, described their half-reactions, and determined which reactions occurred at the anode and at the cathode. We reviewed oxidation states, balanced equations, and finished most of his homework for the week.
The student and I began with some math, which was quite simple. I went over and then corrected any incorrect answers. I explained them, and she seemed to understand them. She is doing well in chemistry.
Since we had just wrapped up a chapter on nuclear reactions, I gave the student a quiz on the material from the chapter. She did great on the quiz even though the material is a bit more difficult than before.
The student and I went over stoichiometry and atomic structure. I feel that she has a strong understanding of the following concepts: isotopes, atomic structure, balancing chemical equations, empirical formulas, molecular formulas, and chemical reaction yields.
We covered a relatively large range of topics that were to be on his exam. The ideal gas law, acid/base chemistry, and ionic compounds were the major topics. He seemed to struggle most with acid/base chemistry at first, but after some instruction everything seemed to click. I have prepared a review sheet for him.
We reviewed for the class final which is going to be at the end of the week. As part of this review we covered a wide range of topics that included atomic theories to radioactivity. The student still struggled with some basic algebra when working on thermodynamic heat exchange questions including isolating variables in the Q=MC(delta T) equation. As such, we went over some math review in relation to these problems and I feel he made significant progress. He is a quick learner and I often do not have to explain things more than once or twice, I strongly believe with some more studying and reviewing the specific areas I mentioned, he will perform well on his final and bump his overall grade in the class.
