We worked on log and exponential functions. The text covers algebra and calculus topics. Tonight, we covered expanding and condensing log and exponential expressions as well as integrating and differentiating those functions. The student is now one to two classes ahead of her class.

The student and I went over any and all missed problems from his previous homework assignments. Upon further scrutiny of the work, we realized that he had actually done most of the problems correctly but was sometimes given no credit because of the fact that he wrote the answer down in terms of inappropriate units or rounded too early in the process of solving the problems. Though minor errors, these can add up on a test. I encouraged him to be careful to check for these details when solving problems in the future.

The student was assigned a worksheet of 16 problems involving finding the volumes of various solids: rectangular solids (with either rectangular bases or triangular bases), rectangular pyramids, right circular cones, and right circular cylinders. The prerequisite formulas: Area of a triangle = (bxh)/2, Area of a rectangle = LxW, a square = SxS, and a circle = 3.14 *r*r. After some guided practice, the student was able to successfully find the volumes of these solids from prior examples and completed the worksheet.

This was a typical session in which we spent half the time on math and half the time on history. We worked specifically on working with negative exponents, which was in advance of the student's lessons in class, so that he could come to class with a foundation on this subject. We continue to work on strategies for him to pass his tests. He knows how to do the problems, but he makes simple mistakes, which cause him to score poorly.

During this session, we went over the material from Chapter 4. After a brief review of the chapter, the student completed the Chapter 4 test review from his textbook. He asked me any questions he had. After that, we reviewed the material from Chapter 5. Finally, he and I reviewed a packet of practice problems he had brought.

This week the student and I reviewed her math team homework. I was very impressed as she understood all the concepts, however, her arithmetic was on the slow side, so I asked her to do some more practice when I'm not there.
