Expository Writing Tutoring FAQ
Being able to effectively write an expository essay is necessary for nearly every educational pursuit. Unlike persuasive or creative writing, expository writing seeks to inform an audience on a specific subject that was previously unknown to that audience. Expository writing may include such elements as analysis, analogy, cause and effect, and comparison. You may take a focused course in expository writing or you may be assigned expository essays for another class. If you find yourself wanting extra support as you write an expository essay for a specific class, or if you want help cultivating the skills necessary for expository writing in general, consider private tutoring.
Expository writing includes many forms of prose, all aimed at informing the reader. Your tutor can walk you through these formats and help you decide which one or combination is right for your project and topic. Expository writing focuses on building a strong essay or composition around the information you want to present. Tutors can help you find a style of writing that best presents your topic, guiding you from the beginning to the end of your writing process with helpful, objective eyes that can strengthen your presentation. Expository writing tutoring also focuses on the grammar and mechanics of writing, so not only do you get your information across to your audience, but your information is presented in a cohesive way that is approachable for your audience. Your tutor can help you edit your work, correcting any structural issues or erroneous formatting while explaining to you why one structure is more accurate or sounds better than another.
Tutors want you to learn during tutoring sessions. They explain the how and why behind editing, so that you have a good grasp on how the mechanical and rhetorical sides of your writing collaborate to produce a strong expository essay. Expository writing tutoring should be a low-stress, informational part of your life. Because tutors set their own schedules, they are often flexible in the times and places they can meet, meaning that you are able to choose a time and place that works best for you. You can choose to work in the comfort of your own home or at a local coffee shop, your college campus, or anywhere else around your area. If you are unable to make a learning session, or you don't enjoy studying in-person, you can choose to meet your tutor over the internet as well.
Regardless of your goals or proficiency level, an expository writing tutor can help you reach the success that you're looking for. Whether you have a classroom assignment or an upcoming work-related project, your tutor can guide you along the way. Unlike classroom-based learning, where the instructor has between 20 to 30 students to manage, your private instructor is dedicated to ensuring that your goals are being met. They are able to fully customize your learning plan, ensuring that you strengthen your weaker areas in an efficient manner.
Becoming an excellent expository writer can open a lot of doors professionally. It is a skill that is valuable in science as well as advertising, and can make you a valuable asset in the professional world. By working with a private tutor, you can sharpen this skill and improve your chances of being promoted or landing your dream job.
If you are serious about improving your skills as an expository writer, contact Varsity Tutors today and ask for help finding an experienced tutor in your area. There are a number of skilled professionals who are eager to help you ace that upcoming essay or assignment, as well as teach you a number of tips and tricks for future use.

Recent Expository Writing Tutoring Session Notes
The student and I worked on her English assignment this week which was a very unique assignment, something I have never even done but love the concept. Her assignment was to construct a "found" poem from Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. We had to read a chapter and pick out Dickens' words, phrases and make up our own poem.
Today the student and I continued to focus on 10th grade English, by completing quizzes and tests. We then began a compare and contrast essay that he was assigned by his teacher! We plan on finishing it tomorrow.
The student felt that she had done well on the in-class timed writing assignment on Deadly Choices that her teacher held this past week. We spent most of our time reviewing and discussing her notes for Jane Eyre. I felt that her thoroughness and analysis were well done. Since her class does not spend class time discussing the book, we had a lengthy discussion about the aspects that her teacher instructed her class to focus on (characterization, mood, 'art of the writer', and themes). We ended by reviewing denotations and connotations, and practicing on a few of the words that she was assigned for homework.
During the session today, we started by going through his math section of homework. We covered story problems as well as 2-digit subtraction. We then went on to cover reading comprehension with a reading passage and questions to follow. We also covered geography and rhyming words. The student did really well on all of the worksheets and seems to have mastered the subject matter.
During my session with student 2, we focused on the math section of her homework, particularly on finding the area and perimeter of an object. We then went on to cover vocabulary and she was very comfortable with the definitions, synonyms, and examples of the word list toward the end of the session.
Practiced identifying parts of speech in complex sentences. Used knowledge of prepositional phrases to place commas in appropriate places in complex sentences. Reviewed the basics of binomial factoring.
The student and I reviewed his homework and focused on a short story that he was assigned in class. I helped him rework his response and explained why it was necessary to make changes. I assigned the student another homework assignment (to practice with last week's essay but format it differently) so that he can practice forming paragraphs.
