Winnipeg ASVAB Tutoring FAQ
Are you preparing to take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), but finding yourself unsure of how best to study for this broad and detailed exam? The ASVAB can have huge implications for the course of your military career, so it is important to approach it with careful preparation and the utmost confidence in your knowledge and abilities. Working with a knowledgeable, personal instructor can help you study in an efficient way. With custom-tailored ASVAB tutoring, you can collaborate with your tutor to design a personalized learning plan that caters to your specific needs and abilities.
Whether you live near a major testing center or not will determine if you take the ASVAB digitally or as a paper-and-pencil exam. While much of the content is the same, there are different strategies for performing well on each testing format. Your personal ASVAB instructor can help you master test-taking techniques to quickly move through questions, take notes and draw figures, and eliminate incorrect answer choices. Developing your approach to different question types and testing formats can have a significant effect on your exam results. The ASVAB covers a variety of material over nine core sections, so it can be difficult to decide what content to study. A tutor can help you by providing an independent assessment of your abilities in each area tested on the exam, and creating a study plan to improve your weakest subjects by attacking them head on. A tutor who knows the ASVAB can also help you focus your studies on the areas in which success is most crucial to helping you attain your preferred military occupation. Test takers who hope to be assigned to General Maintenance may benefit from reviewing different material from those who want to be assigned to Combat Operations, and an ASVAB tutor can help you prepare for the exam with your specific goals in mind. By customizing your instruction to your specific strengths and weaknesses, your tutor can help you focus your attention on improving your weakest skills, and polishing your strengths so they really shine.
If you struggle with questions on the Word Knowledge or Paragraph Comprehension sections, a tutor can assist you by helping you learn to break down text passages and choose correct synonyms. Although it's good to learn new vocabulary, success on test day often can depend on strategy as much as knowledge. Your ASVAB tutor can help you learn just such strategies. If math isn't your strong suit, a tutor can review the quantitative concepts covered on the ASVAB Arithmetic Knowledge and Mathematics Reasoning sections and model techniques for breaking down complex problems, working backwards from the answer choices and drawing helpful figures and graphs. If you're dreading the General Science section, your tutor can help you address any gaps in your knowledge and brush up on any concepts you may be rusty on. In addition to verbal, quantitative, and scientific concepts, the ASVAB tests your mechanical and technical skills in several distinct sections: Electronics Information, Mechanical Comprehension, Assembling Objects, and Auto and Shop Information. These sections may present the greatest challenges to certain test takers, because they are quite unlike sections found on other standardized tests. Your tutor can help you learn just what to expect on each section and how to approach the problems with which you are presented. Even if you don't have extensive experience in a trade, a tutor can show you how to review the basics, as well as clue you into the tricks and pitfalls of the test.
Get off to a great start in your military career by reviewing for the ASVAB in an efficient, effective manner. Gain the skills you need to approach your exam with confidence. ASVAB tutors are available to meet with you in person, or in face-to-face online sessions using the Varsity Tutors live learning platform. To learn more about the ASVAB tutoring options available near you, or to get connected with your first ASVAB tutor, contact the educational directors at Varsity Tutors today!
How much does ASVAB tutoring cost?
The cost of private ASVAB tutoring depends on a variety of factors, including the subject matter you want to go over and your ASVAB tutor's background and familiarity with the material. If you want to invite some of your classmates to study with you, the group setting could also influence the hourly rate you pay.

Recent Winnipeg ASVAB Tutoring Session Notes
We reviewed adding and subtraction of fractions that involves finding the common denominator in which the student is having difficulty. I introduced adding, subtracting, multiplication, and division of decimals. We decided the student needs to do more practice skills outside of sessions. Student was given additional practice skills to work on by the next session. Student was enthusiastic, willing and ready to work. The next session will be 1 1/2 hours.
The student and I had a fabulous session today! We started working through the packet that her teacher gave her to prep for the Math test, and she did a great job! She needs to stop second guessing herself so much, since she always started the problem the right way, and just needed to follow through the rest of the steps in order to arrive at the solution. She also works very slowly, so we worked on ways to cut corners and eliminate answer choices along the way. Overall, she is doing well and I was pleased with her level of focus and commitment during our session today.
Today was the first session with the student. After discussing her goals, she started working through a math exam. We discussed a variety of test taking strategies as we worked through the different types of problems (using "plug-and-play" with answer choices, eliminating obvious wrong answers, and solving only as much of the problem as needed to get the answer). At the end of the session, I gave her the address of a website where she can find worksheets to help her improve.
During our last session, the student completed a full English test. She scored a 33. I am very pleased with her progress on the English sections. Her score has been steadily increasing (27, 28, 30, 30, 30, 33). For homework, she had taken a full Reading and a full English test. She scored a 30 on both. Overall, if she keeps in mind everything we discussed during our practice sessions, she should expect to do very well on the exam.
Today, the student and I focused on geometry. She has improved on her vocabulary and application of Pythagorean identities, but continues to work on similarity, volume, area, and perimeter. I sent her home with practice problems to work on.
During this session, we reviewed the practice test that the student completed and corrected the questions that he missed. He is still doing very well and I believe that he will pass the test on July 16. I left him with a final exam to do that he is unable to use his notes on. It is a practice copy that has the same amount of questions as the test. When we meet for our last session on Monday, we will review the practice test and review some of the equations that he will be able to use on the test.
