I believe that a combination of patience, humor, and enthusiasm is the best way to overcome educational roadblocks. I strive to lessen any fears and negative associations students might have with a given subject. I want my determination to work hard to be an example for my students. I graduated from Wheaton College with a degree in Music History with a minor in Mathematics. I have a track record of excellence in academia overall, and have done well in math courses well beyond calculus. I have tutored mathematics and taught voice lessons on a freelance basis for the past year. I have enjoyed the experience of helping students achieve their goals. Over the summer, I helped an adult student dramatically improve her math skills on very short notice, which allowed her to pass a job-related math test.

I am a graduate of The University at Buffalo. I received my Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with a focus on Structural and Geotechnical design. I currently work as a Structural Design Engineer which makes math part of my daily life. I worked as a Math and Physics tutor at the Westchester Community College for about a year and a half and I have gained a lot of experience working there. My main focus is to get the students interested in the subject they’re studying which makes learning the material a lot more efficient. My philosophy is to keep the students motivated and help them develop critical thinking skills by using as many real life examples as possible. I spend most of my spare time reading, hiking, swimming and playing basketball.

I believe teaching and learning are a combination of factors that come together to help people better themselves on a daily basis. Hard work, creativity, helping others, goal setting, and connecting to one's own personal struggles and triumphs are integral to giving the teacher and student a chance to excel and achieve the small wins necessary to build up to sustained success.

I graduated from the University of Washington with a BS in Biochemistry. When I was younger, I have always enjoyed helping my classmates in subjects that I do well. I first started tutoring the summer before I started college and since then, I have worked with various students, ranging from 1st graders to 10th graders in math, science, reading and writing. I am also fluent in Mandarin Chinese and I am familiar with preparation for standardized tests. My favorite part about tutoring is seeing my students' excitement when they learned something new or when they have come to understand a difficult concept.Through my experiences, I have learned to identify individual student's strengths and weaknesses and to tailor my teaching approach to each individual. I enjoy tutoring students and sharing my experience and study skills to help them achieve their academic goals. When I tutor, I regularly check on the student's understanding and adjust the materials that I teach based on the particular areas the student needs help with. I believe that having a full understanding of the materials and the process of problem solving rather than mere memorization is essential to learning.

My background is in astrophysics with a focus on the observational study of young stars and their properties. I am interested in how the properties of the youngest stars change as they grow and how these properties affect dusty planet forming material associated with the stars. As I learned how to conduct this research I earned a B.S. in Physics and Astronomy, and later, a Ph.D. in Physics and Astronomy. Along the way I have had the opportunity to lead problem sessions and laboratories for college physics and astronomy classes. I have also tutored a number of high school and college students in physics and related classes. I am excited to be here on Varsity Tutors tutoring Physics and Astronomy.

My passion in helping students stems from the fact that I was once one myself, and not a very good one. College was a door to a new opportunity of learning. As soon as I became a college freshman, I saw a different world opening before my eyes. Today, I work with many diverse students in different scenarios: Pre-K to college level; foreign students needing to learn English for careers as well as scholastically; and SAT and ACT preparation for students seeking to get into college. The one thing that's common in these various scenarios is my passion to help students that are apprehensive to learn because they don't know what to do, and teach them how to break down a situation and discover for themselves how to study, learn, and find out to derive the answer for themselves. My Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Syracuse University and my Master's certificate in TEFL/TESOL from Learning Tutoring were not easy to obtain, However, that goal was worth it as they prepare me each day to to teach, interesting, diverse students, and assist them in achieving their educational goals. In addition to proven teaching experience, I have 30+ years' work experience in three different industries--banking, advertising, and hospitality. Since I am teach for a variety of accredited institutions composed of students of many ages and from diverse cultures and backgrounds, my subjects include, but are not limited to: English (verbal, written and phonics), literature, essay writing, SAT and ACT English and math, history, science, filmmaking (award winning filmmaker), acting (union actor--SAG, AEA), 2D animation, drawing, painting, and Adobe Creative Suite. My favorite subject to teach is English--phonics, verbal, reading, and literature. My teaching style is hands-on. I just don't stand or sit there and lecture. Lectures are boring. As my resume and other documents state, I have 30 years experience as a union actor in good standing. Much of this acting experience has been in improvisation and role playing. I bring a lot of role playing activities into my class, especially when I am teaching foreign adults who need to know English for their jobs/or if the relocated to the U.S. My lessons are based on the students themselves. They're tailored to student individual needs. We do a student scenario, say applying for a graduate degree scholarship. If they are employed in an English speaking environment, we might do something where they are interviewing for a promotion. My philosophy is all about the 'individual student's needs,' whether I am teaching a class of six students or one-on-one. Outside of the class, I am interested in kayaking, filmmaking, and writing scripts and plays.
