Hello! I've spent the majority of my professional life teaching -- as a classroom teacher, substitute teacher, a special education paraprofessional and as a theatre teaching artist. I'm also a playwright and work for a nonprofit arts center in downtown Hartford.I'm passionate about education, and I love the experience of one-on-one teaching. I am a rising sophomore at Kenyon College, a small liberal arts school an hour out of Columbus, Ohio, majoring in Philosophy. It is difficult to identify a specialty of mine because I have worked with students from 1st grade through high school on topics ranging from elementary science to trigonometry test prep, but my foremost strength is the three sections of the SAT. I have roughly three years of experience tutoring and last year taught a test prep class. My approach to tutoring is to identify a students strengths and build upon them through frequent quizzes and reflective analysis. Additionally, having just gone through the college admissions process, I am privy to its length and complexity so can lend advice on anything, namely essays. I have plenty of experience writing and have been published in a local newspaper. While I think math is the easiest subject for me to teach, writing and writing skills are my favorite to teach because to see a writers progress is an extraordinary sight and, further, challenge.

I have worked in education for the past 16 years. My undergraduate was earned at the University of Portland in Elementary Education. After teaching 5th grade in Tucson for a couple years I wanted to be able to impact more students, so I earned my Masters in Educational Leadership through Northern Arizona University. My passion is working with students to help them love learning. Throughout my career I have worked in many different positions where my teaching was needed to benefit students. Some of those positions have included 5th grade teacher, 7th grade ELA teacher, HS Algebra teacher, assistant principal, principal, and learning support coordinator. In addition to the titles that I have held, working with students to help them understand a concept is extremely rewarding, so I have continued to tutor throughout my career.I am also the mother of three kids. Two of my children have are qualified gifted and have needs in school to be challenged academically, so they are not bored. One of my children is a struggling reader who needs many different approaches to learn concepts. As I have worked with each of my own children, I truly understand the importance of finding the right person. Students need to work with a tutor, so they can learn and feel good about the way they learn.During my time away from student I am an active person who loves to hike, bike, play sports and read.

From there I went on to teaching overseas in first Kenya followed by Nicaragua then Romania and lastly Japan. I knew I had a passion for teaching by this point so I returned to Portland and earned my Masters in Teaching at Concordia University in secondary level English Language Arts. I am now working towards adding an English as a Second Language endorsement.In each of the aforementioned countries, I have tutored students between the ages of nine years old to 47 years old. My daughter who is almost three, is my newest student. I am most knowledgable in tutoring English Language Arts and prefer elementary to high school grades and subjects.From my experiences, I know that hands-on learning that is relevant to the student is the best way for a student to retain information. I like to be creative with learning and get excited to use music, exercise, art, and the environment in my teaching for example.Outside of teaching I enjoy spending time with my husband and two young daughters, exercising, gardening, reading, eating good food, photography, dancing and enjoy outdoor activities.

My love for relationships and my desire to help the less fortunate or struggling beautifully melded together when I had the chance to take up tutoring in my sophomore year of high school. My most memorable tutoring experience consisted of working with an ESL student who was struggling with writing and English. Although I encountered obstacles in my teaching, I was constantly motivated by the fact that I could use my education, especially in areas that I am greatly passionate about (writing and literature), to help this student gain confidence in her learning abilities and get to a point where, instead of being discouraged, she could actually enjoy learning. I especially loved the moments when she reached a breakthrough in her understanding of a concept and was so happy that I had been able to use my knowledge to enhance her understanding and enjoyment of a topic. I tutored through out high school and continue to tutor in college as I help other students to realize their potential and achieve their goals.Beyond tutoring, I enjoy hanging out with friends, mentoring, going for runs, and playing music (I play guitar, piano, and am currently learning cello). I also love to read making my life as an English major quite enjoyable and one of my greatest delights is seeing a neat pile of the five different books I'm trying to read simultaneously all stacked up on my desk. I look forward to the great privilege of working with students and getting to know them both academically and personally!

I am a graduate of Virginia Tech University. I received my Bachelor of Arts in English and my Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction. Since graduation in 2001, I have worked in the education industry. I truly enjoy working with students of all ages. My passion is teaching English, Literature, Grammar, and Writing. I have experience working with students as young as the 3rd grade teaching summer school and intervention classes. I have also taught at the high school and Community College Level. The majority of my teaching experience has been with Middle School students in a classroom setting, along with after school tutoring and intervention classes. I feel very comfortable working with different age levels because I am extremely well prepared and able to differentiate learning styles. In addition, I truly enjoy watching students learn and achieve to their potential. It became second nature to differentiate my lessons and teaching in order to accommodate all of my different learners. Some of my successful methods come from my own experiences of being an at-risk student. I shared the steps I took in order to overcome odds and how to set and meet goals. I tutored during evenings and Saturdays. I encouraged students to come in for help during my lunch and planning periods and permitted them to sit in my classes during their study halls, free periods, etc.When students' needs are met, they feel empowered to accept opportunities and ultimately transform their dreams into reality.
