Today, we read a poem over the five w's and discussed personification. We then went over the water cycle, weather data collection tools, and the planets. The student really liked talking about the scale of the universe (which he didn't entirely believe) and how stars work. For extra work, I gave him a story about how the traits of being selfish and mean are punished with evolution.

Today we worked only on science. We figured out what assignment is due tomorrow, printed and completed it (on mitosis and meiosis). The student seemed pretty unfamiliar with the two processes, but did well using resources to find answers. We then completed an assignment on Google Classroom on reproduction but did not submit it per parent request. Also per parent request, I asked him for his agenda, but he did not have it, so I had him write upcoming assignments on a May calendar page I had brought with me on another day. He should definitely continue studying the mitosis and meiosis materials. I printed a study guide and brought it, but it's not due until Friday, so we will do that next time. I'd recommend that he work on it before our next session, though, so he can look at the material a bit each day before the quiz Friday.

Today, the student showed me a website he created about the digestive system. He completed the first page with a textbook definition of the digestive system but I knew he could produce something better. We discussed considering your audience when writing. He countered that the information he provided was factual. I agreed, but the information provided could also be entertaining. I also explained that as he is creating a website, to consider his page hits. One way to guarantee interest is with compelling content. He came up with a great opener and likened the journey through the digestive system to an adventure. We also did a bit of graphic design on the website to increase its readability. Next, we went over a coordinate plotting worksheet. We discussed labeling your points, how quadrants are numbered, and the proper way to write coordinate points using parentheses and an x and y value: (x,y).

We covered the student's take-home exam, going over each question one by one and deciding the most appropriate way to answer them. Specific concepts covered were transduction (specialized), replicative transposons, Recombination in U Tube Experiments, experimental design and data interpretation, research on gut microbiomes and their relationship with obesity, knockout experiments in TLR research, mitochondrial role in detecting danger, vaccines & immune responses, host-parasite relationships, and aerobic bacteria responding to an anaerobic environment. The student had a great grasp of the material, with only minor confusion on a couple of questions. I gave her some additional reading to review and am confident she'll do well on her final.

The student was initially challenged with the following concepts: rotavirus, hantavirus, endospores, and other infectious diseases. We discussed the course of HIV infection, how they produce, and effect on the immune system in depth. The student understands the material much better and feels more confident. I used many analogies to make the student understand the hard concepts. The student will meet with me tomorrow for another session to reassess her understanding and review other materials
