Throughout my own educational career, I have had my fair share of bad and good teachers and professors. As a university graduate now, I am truly appreciative of those who genuinely cared and took the time to share their knowledge with me and to create an environment for me to thrive and better reach my academic goals. Fortunately, I myself have also had the privilege of teaching and tutoring as well, and of passing on that same legacy of academic inspiration. After working with a variety of different students in different subjects, I realize that I love stirring enthusiasm in students and helping them understand invaluable concepts that will eventually lead them to their own paths of success. No one student is the same. My many experiences have shaped my teaching style and philosophy which can be outlined in three main aspects:1. pace and styleWhen presented with new material, the first step is processing and understanding it. Different students take in and digest new material in different ways and with different timing. Hence, I utilize a number of different teaching methods and select those that best fit a student's needs. For a visual learner, for instance, I would make sure to incorporate diagrams, pictures, and maps to best engage that student's learning potential. As for pace, some students can only take in so much information at one time and I would break down information in a way that is easiest for them to digest.2. mastery and dexterityPerhaps the most important skill any tutor and cultivate in a student is critical thinking. When a student finally comes to understand material, it is important that he or she is able to execute those concepts in different contexts and in different scenarios. When a student asks questions, I often times like to respond with questions myself that help them guide them to the correct deductions and conclusions themselves. This will also help ensure their ability to do well on their tests when they don't have a tutor around.3. vision and applicationA student's motivation to do well should be driven by the ability to see the application and relevance of the knowledge they are learning. Whether or not a subject seems to have any direct correlation with their future career, there are always key concepts that will either help them better function in society or at their future career. I love helping students find take-away concepts from subjects and application in their own lives.

I am a graduate of the University of California, San Diego. I received my Bachelor of Science in Human Biology with a minor in Psychology. After graduating from UCSD in 2010, I earned my Master's of Public Health at The George Washington University in Washington, DC. Fanatical about good stories and good books, I love to read and see movies or plays or tune in to talk shows on NPR. I was born and raised in San Diego, California where I spent 7 years at UCSD to attain my bachelor's degree in physics with a specialization in earth science and master's degree in geophysics. After a year off, I moved to St Louis, Missouri to get my PhD in geophysics at Washington University in St Louis. I'm now living in Tempe, Arizona and looking to help some students with math and science. I'm one of those people who actually enjoys doing math and science, and I think it is very important for people to understand the concepts and ideas behind these subjects. I am a graduate of UC San Diego with a Bachelors in Neuroscience through the Psychology department. After graduating, I went to Michigan Technological University and did some graduate work, before moving to Texas to be closer to my parents. I did my alternative certification program through Texas Teachers and am highly qualified to teach Science for grades 7-12. I have always loved math and spreading that enjoyment! Being a well rounded student is crucial to both college admissions and being an active and aware citizen, so I enjoy helping others learn. I have taught precalculus to groups online via North South Foundation for the past 4 years and in person at Mathnasium for the past year. I am a current undergraduate, majoring in Bioengineering and minoring in Mathematics and Deaf Studies. I enjoy tutoring for SAT, ACT, AP exams (listed later), PSAT, and math competitions as I have a lot of experience in these.

I received my BS in Biology/Ecology from UCSD in 2011. I also earned a minor in English Literature. I moved to Oakland in 2013 to attend graduate school at SFSU where I earned my MS in Ecology Conservation Biology. I did my thesis studying social behavior and disease in salamanders! In the past I have done research on everything from sea turtles to birds and bugs, and have been lucky enough to travel to lots of cool places like Thailand, Panama, and Costa Rica to work on conservation projects. I work as field biologist.My husband and I moved to Portland in March 2018 and are excited to make it our home! Outside of work I love outdoor activities including hiking and camping (especially with our chocolate lab, Riley). I also love to bake, craft and sew, and do yoga.I have been tutoring for about 7 years now, working with students grades K-12 in a variety of subjects including math, science, reading comprehension and test preparation. My favorite subject to tutor is math, because when I was younger it was something that I struggled with until I got the right help.
