I have always tutored my siblings and my friends, but in 2012 I began tutoring professionally. My teaching style includes using lots of visual aids to make the concept easier to grasp and ensures that all my students understand the concept instead of memorizing the subject. My expertise lies in teaching math and biology. I am currently in my third-year of dental school and will graduate as a dentist in 2017. My undergraduate degree focused on human biology.

I graduated cum laude with a BA in History and Literature of England from Harvard and spent my junior year at the University of Bristol in England, where I was lucky to add Irish History and Practical Theatre classes to my schedule. I hold an MFA in Acting from UCSD and am an Associate of The London Film School. For much of my adult life, I have been a professional actor dividing time between classical work, new plays, and investigative theater. I have taught classes in acting, public speaking, Shakespeare, and Devised Theatre at UCSD, The Shakespeare Theatre of NJ and in diverse locations as a member of the NY based theater company, The Civilians. No matter what I'm working on with students --reading, writing, public speaking or study skills-- I hope to foster a love of learning and to encourage a curious and inquisitive approach to the world. I believe passionately that proficiency in the language arts empowers people to communicate with clarity and conviction in all aspects of their lives. Fanatical about good stories and good books, I love to read and see movies or plays or tune in to talk shows on NPR. I'm a foodie and an avid traveller and would probably always rather be on Cape Cod.

To start, I am a Korean-American originally from a small suburb near Los Angeles, California. My educational history includes a major in General Biology and minor in Psychology from the University of California, San Diego, as well as a Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree from Boston University. My educational interests include anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, neurobiology/psychology, algebra, and child and adolescent psychology. My personal interests vary from cooking to hiking to watching and playing just about every sport possible.I have had many years of tutoring experience in both a class and 1-on-1 setting. My longest experience involved tutoring a group of 10-12 7th and 8th grade students; which included but was not limited to completing schoolwork, preparing for STAR testing, and providing additional quizzes and questions when necessary. I have also had several years of part-time tutoring jobs for children in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 6th grade, with additional experience in 1-on-1 tutoring with 2 SAT students. My experience with teaching stems from not just an instructor's perspective, but also as a student; attending after school tutoring from the age of 13 to 17 years old. I believe this is one of the reasons I can connect to students so easily, because I understand the difficulties with learning. My tutoring sessions involve a very interactive approach on the part of the student with a reward based approach for their efforts. This is my way of promoting student interest in the topics of study, to prevent monotony and boredom with school work. I like to try to incorporate games into my tutoring sessions that may include topics they have learned; whether it's a memory card game, jeopardy, or a simple game of hangman. As your tutor, I will do my best to not only help your student excel at school, but also find fun in learning.

Throughout my own educational career, I have had my fair share of bad and good teachers and professors. As a university graduate now, I am truly appreciative of those who genuinely cared and took the time to share their knowledge with me and to create an environment for me to thrive and better reach my academic goals. Fortunately, I myself have also had the privilege of teaching and tutoring as well, and of passing on that same legacy of academic inspiration. After working with a variety of different students in different subjects, I realize that I love stirring enthusiasm in students and helping them understand invaluable concepts that will eventually lead them to their own paths of success. No one student is the same. My many experiences have shaped my teaching style and philosophy which can be outlined in three main aspects:1. pace and styleWhen presented with new material, the first step is processing and understanding it. Different students take in and digest new material in different ways and with different timing. Hence, I utilize a number of different teaching methods and select those that best fit a student's needs. For a visual learner, for instance, I would make sure to incorporate diagrams, pictures, and maps to best engage that student's learning potential. As for pace, some students can only take in so much information at one time and I would break down information in a way that is easiest for them to digest.2. mastery and dexterityPerhaps the most important skill any tutor and cultivate in a student is critical thinking. When a student finally comes to understand material, it is important that he or she is able to execute those concepts in different contexts and in different scenarios. When a student asks questions, I often times like to respond with questions myself that help them guide them to the correct deductions and conclusions themselves. This will also help ensure their ability to do well on their tests when they don't have a tutor around.3. vision and applicationA student's motivation to do well should be driven by the ability to see the application and relevance of the knowledge they are learning. Whether or not a subject seems to have any direct correlation with their future career, there are always key concepts that will either help them better function in society or at their future career. I love helping students find take-away concepts from subjects and application in their own lives.

First, a little background. I recently retired from the College of Education at Oregon State University where, for the last six years, I was a teacher educator helping to prepare prospective secondary math and science teachers. I held a similar position for eight years at the School of Education at UNC Chapel Hill. Before I moved to higher ed, I was a high school physics, math, and general science teacher in Seattle Public Schools for 15 years. So I've been teaching math and science content and pedagogy for almost 30 years. And before all of that I was an electronics test engineer in the Seattle area for 15 years. Over that time I earned a master's degree in physics from the University of Washington and a Ph.D. in education (physics), also from UW (my BA is in philosophy with a minor in math and physics from UC San Diego). Anyway, though I've retired, I'd like to keep on teaching, albeit on a more informal basis such a through tutoring. As you might imagine, I've worked with all kinds of students from kids with learning challenges to very gifted students. I subscribe to the "teach them to fish" educational philosophy by which I mean that my goal as a teacher has always been to help students learn both the "how" and "so what?" when solving problems in math and science so they will be able to do it for themselves in a variety of situations. For me, it's not enough that a student know how to solve a problem, I want them also to understand why both the content and/or procedure are important and worthy of learning. One of the biggest motivators for me as a teacher is getting students to the "aha!" moment. So, probably the most important lesson I've learned as a teacher and teacher educator is to listen carefully to what students say what students say is the best way for a teacher to really understand what students are thinking. The questions students ask as well as the answers they give are powerful tools to help teachers guide their learning. I've become a very good listener.

School takes up anywhere from 30-70% of a student's waking life, and there is no reason anyone should feel subpar or inadequate for that vast amount of time. I completed my undergraduate coursework at the University of California, San Diego, where I graduated cum laude with a major in Literature in English and a minor in General Biology, so whether you're an aspiring engineer struggling with poetry, or a future novelist grappling with coordinate geometry, I'm on your wavelength. In college I was a classroom volunteer tutor for the Preuss Charter School in San Diego, and I've been working for nearly two years now as a professional tutor, and have thorough experience with a range of subjects and standardized test formats. I also write pop culture articles on the side, and aspire to be a college professor of literature; consequently, I most enjoy teaching English and composition, and pride myself on being able to break down essay-writing to its most fundamental, obvious-as-peanuts basics. When I am not saving children from the abyss of school-related anxiety, I indulge in film photography, kung fu movies, and guitar.

I believe that education is first and foremost about establishing relationships. I genuinely and deeply care about the students with whom I work, which creates a reciprocal relationship that I think is the foundation for establishing an education for students. The students I work with know I want the best for them, that everything I do for them is a gift for them because I care about them and want them to succeed.I got my education at the University of California, San Diego, where I majored in history and psychology. I stayed at UCSD for graduate school to earn a multiple subject teaching credential and a Master in Education. But, I tutor in all subjects in elementary and middle school. I tutor in history and writing in high school. In my free time, I enjoy playing golf, ultimate frisbee, and racquetball. No matter what the subject, each student requires a new, unique approach when tutoring. I'll admit it: I love history. How much do I love it? Well, sure, I've been a History/English teacher for almost 20 years -- but I wasn't born that way! I grew up in California and my previous career was in both the music and film industries. This gives me the ability to teach while integrating pop culture, movies, TV, music (and maybe even humor?), making the subject matter a LOT more accessible, understandable and yes, in some cases, even enjoyable!I've been teaching all levels of history/social studies for over 20 years (middle and high school), as well as teaching AP-level US, World and European History, test prep, and I've even served as Department Chair for History at two schools. In addition to history I am also experienced in teaching Civics/Government, Economics, Human Geography and Psychology. If it's in the Social Sciences, I've taught it.My goal as a teacher/tutor is to show students that history isn't just made up of "dates" and "dead people," but actual STORIES that connect where we are today to where we came from. History CAN be fun and interesting -- if you learn it the right way!

I was also a Teaching Assistant for the Biology department at UCSD. I have taught in a variety of settings; from one-on-one tutoring to review sessions for 300 people in a lecture hall. I primarily tutor MCAT, SAT, and the SAT.In my experience, rather than the Tutor being an all-knowing power who lectures on the information, the most beneficial environment for the student is one that feels like a conversation. By creating a dynamic atmosphere between Tutor and student, the student will be able to truly understand the material. Constant collaboration is the key to a student's success and I have spent years mastering this skill. My interests, outside of teaching, include sports, music, and international work. I graduated from University of California, San Diego and I grew up in China. I am really addicted in Mathematics and have a lot of tutoring experience to share. I worked as a math tutor math learning center for years. I have helped students from 6 years old to 60 years old. I have helped student's grades change significantly from failing to an A. The secret is that one can never succeed in math without practice.Badminton and Piano are two of my best friends. I learned piano from the age of 3 and I can play by ear now. I was also professionally trained badminton during my high school and achieved 2nd level national athlete in China. However, the characteristic that makes me special is my experience. I left home and came to California without a penny in my pocket. I have worked from a dishwasher to math tutor, from cashier to data analyst. While I am doing the hard work as a minimum wage worker, there has been a voice telling me -- Michael, you will not end up with that, you must study as hard as you can to earn a better life. I successfully survived in California, graduated from college and I am currently working as Actuarial Analyst. What I have learned from my story is that we must cherish every opportunity to study. So, if you are interested in a polite Chinese guy with an excellent mathematical foundation, with a lot of interests, and a young man who is self-supported as a first generation immigrant who had faced and overcame difficulties, please kindly contact me.I will try my best to help you succeed in Math and won't give up.

I am a graduate of UC San Diego with a Bachelors in Neuroscience through the Psychology department. After graduating, I went to Michigan Technological University and did some graduate work, before moving to Texas to be closer to my parents. I did my alternative certification program through Texas Teachers and am highly qualified to teach Science for grades 7-12. I have been a teacher in public and charter schools for the last four years, and have tutoring experience extending over ten years behind me as well.I am most passionate about teaching because I love seeing people learn, grow, and become problem solvers and leaders of the future. It's hugely rewarding for me whenever someone changes their mind about a subject, displays interest in continuing to study something related to what we've worked on together, or simply becomes proud of their academic improvement and success. My approach to teaching anything involves first engaging with the student, then making sure they have a strong foundation before reinforcing anything that they're struggling on. I love to make learning fun and interactive, because we all retain more of what we learn when we enjoy it. I hope to reach many more students with my infectious enthusiasm as the years go by.

I am a first-year medical student attending Rosalind Franklin University. I completed my bachelor's degree at UC San Diego studying Bioengineering with an emphasis on Control Systems and Mathematical Modeling. I have worked with graduate students, collegiate students, and school students. Tutoring is one of the most satisfying ways I spend my time. I value and enjoy building a rapport with each student so I can challenge him or her to think critically about a given problem. On the flip side, I continually remind my students to critique and to question what I am presenting, especially if a point is unclear. This not only helps my students to gain a complete understanding, but it also drives me to improve how I explain a concept. My passion for being a tutor comes from my family. I am the oldest son in a family of four children and took great pride helping my younger siblings with their homework while I was in high school. In my free time, I enjoy being active. I played collegiate lacrosse and also enjoy surfing, running, and playing soccer when I have some extra free time.

I am a graduate of University of California, San Diego. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a focus on International Relations, and a minor in Philosophy. Since graduation, I've been interning at a policy think-tank in Washington, D.C. I really enjoy tutoring a broad range of subjectsfrom math to test prep to writingbecause it keeps me intellectually active and on my toes. I really like to tutor by leading my partner through an analysis of his/her thought process in problem-solving; I've found it's a really effective way to break bad mental habits and create new, good ones.

I am a Masters student with a 3.9 GPA studying Industrial/Organizational Psychology. I have taken many years of statistics, both at the undergraduate and the graduate level, and have years of tutoring experience. As a high schooler, I independently tutored a young girl in both reading and math for several years. Separately, I also tutored two young women for whom English was a second language. In my undergraduate career at UCSD, I was a teaching assistant for an upper division psychology course. As part of my graduate assistantship, I also assist or instruct (depending on the semester) for undergraduate statistics. I host office hours and SPSS-based labs, grade assignments, present material, provide study tools, and act as as a support system for my students. I have experience writing graduate school application essays and reviewing others'. Lastly, I have a wealth of scientific writing experience thanks to years of research and Master's thesis work.I am passionate about helping people achieve that "A ha!" moment. I have a true love of learning - it has propelled me to pursue a graduate degree and to assist others in doing the same. I enjoy building relationships with those I can assist, seeing them grow and make strides. There's nothing quite like the confusion of feeling lost in one's classes. I understand this feeling, I empathize with it, and I commit myself to lessen and, ultimately, eliminate it for others. It would be my pleasure to assist you in gaining confidence with all aspects of research methods! If you're interested, please reach out to me.
