I'll admit it: I love history. How much do I love it? Well, sure, I've been a History/English teacher for almost 20 years -- but I wasn't born that way! I grew up in California and my previous career was in both the music and film industries. This gives me the ability to teach while integrating pop culture, movies, TV, music (and maybe even humor?), making the subject matter a LOT more accessible, understandable and yes, in some cases, even enjoyable!I've been teaching all levels of history/social studies for over 20 years (middle and high school), as well as teaching AP-level US, World and European History, test prep, and I've even served as Department Chair for History at two schools. I also write pop culture articles on the side, and aspire to be a college professor of literature; consequently, I most enjoy teaching English and composition, and pride myself on being able to break down essay-writing to its most fundamental, obvious-as-peanuts basics. When I am not saving children from the abyss of school-related anxiety, I indulge in film photography, kung fu movies, and guitar.

I received my BS in Biology/Ecology from UCSD in 2011. I also earned a minor in English Literature. I moved to Oakland in 2013 to attend graduate school at SFSU where I earned my MS in Ecology Conservation Biology. I did my thesis studying social behavior and disease in salamanders! In the past I have done research on everything from sea turtles to birds and bugs, and have been lucky enough to travel to lots of cool places like Thailand, Panama, and Costa Rica to work on conservation projects. I work as field biologist.My husband and I moved to Portland in March 2018 and are excited to make it our home! Outside of work I love outdoor activities including hiking and camping (especially with our chocolate lab, Riley). I also love to bake, craft and sew, and do yoga.I have been tutoring for about 7 years now, working with students grades K-12 in a variety of subjects including math, science, reading comprehension and test preparation. My favorite subject to tutor is math, because when I was younger it was something that I struggled with until I got the right help. Now I like to give other students that same opportunity to reach their potential. I love helping students get excited about learning and boosting their confidence in subjects they might not have enjoyed before. When working with students I like to help them find what learning techniques are best for them. I myself am a visual learner, and I usually use this as a starting point, but I love to adapt based on students' personal needs.
