My name is Linda and I'm currently a fourth year medical student. I graduated from UCSD with B.S. degree in Biochemistry and Cell Biology and a minor in Visual Art. I'm very interested in math and science, as can seen with my educational background. Since I'm currently a student myself, I understand the frustration one can experience when faced with some academic challenges. To start, I am a Korean-American originally from a small suburb near Los Angeles, California. My personal interests vary from cooking to hiking to watching and playing just about every sport possible.I have had many years of tutoring experience in both a class and 1-on-1 setting. My longest experience involved tutoring a group of 10-12 7th and 8th grade students; which included but was not limited to completing schoolwork, preparing for STAR testing, and providing additional quizzes and questions when necessary. I have also had several years of part-time tutoring jobs for children in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 6th grade, with additional experience in 1-on-1 tutoring with 2 SAT students.My experience with teaching stems from not just an instructor's perspective, but also as a student; attending after school tutoring from the age of 13 to 17 years old. I believe this is one of the reasons I can connect to students so easily, because I understand the difficulties with learning. My tutoring sessions involve a very interactive approach on the part of the student with a reward based approach for their efforts. This is my way of promoting student interest in the topics of study, to prevent monotony and boredom with school work. I'm in my 2nd year of medical school at the University of Central Florida. I previously graduated Cum Laude from the University of California, San Diego with a degree in Human Biology and Education Studies. I was an Academic Mentor for underprivileged San Diego communities. I was also a Teaching Assistant for the Biology department at UCSD. I have taught in a variety of settings; from one-on-one tutoring to review sessions for 300 people in a lecture hall. I received my BS in Biology/Ecology from UCSD in 2011. I also earned a minor in English Literature. I moved to Oakland in 2013 to attend graduate school at SFSU where I earned my MS in Ecology Conservation Biology. I did my thesis studying social behavior and disease in salamanders! In the past I have done research on everything from sea turtles to birds and bugs, and have been lucky enough to travel to lots of cool places like Thailand, Panama, and Costa Rica to work on conservation projects. I work as field biologist.My husband and I moved to Portland in March 2018 and are excited to make it our home! Outside of work I love outdoor activities including hiking and camping (especially with our chocolate lab, Riley). Hi, I am a Ucsd physics major and have plenty of experience working with children between being a tutor and having worked in childcare. I am a 2014 graduate from The University of Arizona with a Ph.D. in Special Education with a focus on Deafness and a minor in Family Studies and Human Development. I'll admit it: I love history. How much do I love it? Well, sure, I've been a History/English teacher for almost 20 years -- but I wasn't born that way! I grew up in California and my previous career was in both the music and film industries. First, a little background. I recently retired from the College of Education at Oregon State University where, for the last six years, I was a teacher educator helping to prepare prospective secondary math and science teachers. I held a similar position for eight years at the School of Education at UNC Chapel Hill. Before I moved to higher ed, I was a high school physics, math, and general science teacher in Seattle Public Schools for 15 years. So I've been teaching math and science content and pedagogy for almost 30 years. And before all of that I was an electronics test engineer in the Seattle area for 15 years. Over that time I earned a master's degree in physics from the University of Washington and a Ph.D. in education (physics), also from UW (my BA is in philosophy with a minor in math and physics from UC San Diego). Anyway, though I've retired, I'd like to keep on teaching, albeit on a more informal basis such a through tutoring. As you might imagine, I've worked with all kinds of students from kids with learning challenges to very gifted students. I subscribe to the "teach them to fish" educational philosophy by which I mean that my goal as a teacher has always been to help students learn both the "how" and "so what?" when solving problems in math and science so they will be able to do it for themselves in a variety of situations. For me, it's not enough that a student know how to solve a problem, I want them also to understand why both the content and/or procedure are important and worthy of learning. One of the biggest motivators for me as a teacher is getting students to the "aha!" moment. So, probably the most important lesson I've learned as a teacher and teacher educator is to listen carefully to what students say what students say is the best way for a teacher to really understand what students are thinking. The questions students ask as well as the answers they give are powerful tools to help teachers guide their learning. I've become a very good listener.

When a student finally comes to understand material, it is important that he or she is able to execute those concepts in different contexts and in different scenarios. When a student asks questions, I often times like to respond with questions myself that help them guide them to the correct deductions and conclusions themselves. This will also help ensure their ability to do well on their tests when they don't have a tutor around.3. vision and applicationA student's motivation to do well should be driven by the ability to see the application and relevance of the knowledge they are learning. Whether or not a subject seems to have any direct correlation with their future career, there are always key concepts that will either help them better function in society or at their future career. I completed my undergraduate coursework at the University of California, San Diego, where I graduated cum laude with a major in Literature in English and a minor in General Biology, so whether you're an aspiring engineer struggling with poetry, or a future novelist grappling with coordinate geometry, I'm on your wavelength. In college I was a classroom volunteer tutor for the Preuss Charter School in San Diego, and I've been working for nearly two years now as a professional tutor, and have thorough experience with a range of subjects and standardized test formats. I also write pop culture articles on the side, and aspire to be a college professor of literature; consequently, I most enjoy teaching English and composition, and pride myself on being able to break down essay-writing to its most fundamental, obvious-as-peanuts basics. When I am not saving children from the abyss of school-related anxiety, I indulge in film photography, kung fu movies, and guitar.

IB and AP are the principle of economics foundational courses economics, business, or finance majors take at university.I have taught Spanish and am proficient in reading, writing, listening, and speaking Spanish. These are the four skills tested in high school courses in the US. I passed the proficiency exam at University and enjoy helping others with the grammar and conversational aspects of Spanish.In addition, I enjoy helping students develop their writing and study skills. As I have been tutoring math, literature, test preparation, and writing through out middle school, high school, and college, I have found tutoring to be very fulfilling and inspiring. No matter what the subject, each student requires a new, unique approach when tutoring. Whether they want to raise their test score or if they just are not getting the subject, above all, I understand a student's individual needs to best know how as a tutor, I can best help them reach their goals.I graduated from the University of California, San Diego with a bachelors degree in Literature and have lived in New York just over a year. My interests include art, writing, and technology; I especially love it when the three come together. I am an avid reader of canonical and "experimental" literature, so I love tutoring writing and english literature. I've been interested in teaching and tutoring since I was a teaching assistant in graduate school. While in grad school, I taught courses in statistics, political science, and history.My degree was in political science with a focus on statistical analysis, and I am now training to be a data scientist.For me it's a really fun challenge learning how a student sees a concept and how I can guide them to expand their understanding of it. Seeing a concept "click" with a student is one of the most rewarding feelings.
