First, a little background. I recently retired from the College of Education at Oregon State University where, for the last six years, I was a teacher educator helping to prepare prospective secondary math and science teachers. I held a similar position for eight years at the School of Education at UNC Chapel Hill. Before I moved to higher ed, I was a high school physics, math, and general science teacher in Seattle Public Schools for 15 years. So I've been teaching math and science content and pedagogy for almost 30 years. And before all of that I was an electronics test engineer in the Seattle area for 15 years. Over that time I earned a master's degree in physics from the University of Washington and a Ph.D. in education (physics), also from UW (my BA is in philosophy with a minor in math and physics from UC San Diego). Anyway, though I've retired, I'd like to keep on teaching, albeit on a more informal basis such a through tutoring. As you might imagine, I've worked with all kinds of students from kids with learning challenges to very gifted students. I subscribe to the "teach them to fish" educational philosophy by which I mean that my goal as a teacher has always been to help students learn both the "how" and "so what?" when solving problems in math and science so they will be able to do it for themselves in a variety of situations. For me, it's not enough that a student know how to solve a problem, I want them also to understand why both the content and/or procedure are important and worthy of learning. I am a master teacher with over thirty-five years of teaching experience at both the university and secondary level. I hold a B.A. in English, an M.A. in Speech from the University of Michigan, and an M.F.A. in Theatre from the University of California, San Diego. I am also a trained Waldorf high school teacher. I have acted, directed, and produced hundreds of plays and am a published playwright. I am experienced managing training programs for young artists. I love to see students explore their limits, to challenge them to achieve beyond their expectations, and to imagine and create new expressions. I like teaching English, History, Philosophy, Comparative Religion, and Theatre. I believe that the division between the humanities and the sciences is arbitrary: learning depends on observation, attention to detail, and a feel for beauty and truth. I have guided many students, both gifted and remedial, as a teacher and tutor. In addition to loving the outdoors, I also teach Tai Chi and meditation, enjoy gardening, reading, and a good game of chess.

As I have been tutoring math, literature, test preparation, and writing through out middle school, high school, and college, I have found tutoring to be very fulfilling and inspiring. No matter what the subject, each student requires a new, unique approach when tutoring. My interests include art, writing, and technology; I especially love it when the three come together. I am an avid reader of canonical and "experimental" literature, so I love tutoring writing and english literature. I am also great at tutoring Algebra, and I have helped students prepare for the SAT.

Throughout my own educational career, I have had my fair share of bad and good teachers and professors. As a university graduate now, I am truly appreciative of those who genuinely cared and took the time to share their knowledge with me and to create an environment for me to thrive and better reach my academic goals. After working with a variety of different students in different subjects, I realize that I love stirring enthusiasm in students and helping them understand invaluable concepts that will eventually lead them to their own paths of success. No one student is the same. My many experiences have shaped my teaching style and philosophy which can be outlined in three main aspects:1. pace and styleWhen presented with new material, the first step is processing and understanding it. Different students take in and digest new material in different ways and with different timing. Hence, I utilize a number of different teaching methods and select those that best fit a student's needs. For a visual learner, for instance, I would make sure to incorporate diagrams, pictures, and maps to best engage that student's learning potential. As for pace, some students can only take in so much information at one time and I would break down information in a way that is easiest for them to digest.2. mastery and dexterityPerhaps the most important skill any tutor and cultivate in a student is critical thinking. When a student finally comes to understand material, it is important that he or she is able to execute those concepts in different contexts and in different scenarios. When a student asks questions, I often times like to respond with questions myself that help them guide them to the correct deductions and conclusions themselves. This will also help ensure their ability to do well on their tests when they don't have a tutor around.3. vision and applicationA student's motivation to do well should be driven by the ability to see the application and relevance of the knowledge they are learning. Whether or not a subject seems to have any direct correlation with their future career, there are always key concepts that will either help them better function in society or at their future career. I love helping students find take-away concepts from subjects and application in their own lives.

Education has always been a passion of mine. I love to learn about new things and expand my knowledge of various topics. Above that, I enjoying helping people even more. After receiving my Bachelor's in Science from UC San Diego in Biochemistry, I decided to pursue a profession in health care. I felt that by going into health care I can utilize my passion for biology to help others in need. I decided on Optometry and currently I am attending Marshall B. Ketchum University to obtain my Doctor of Optometry degree. I absolutely love where I am and want to help others achieve their dreams.

I believe that education is first and foremost about establishing relationships. I genuinely and deeply care about the students with whom I work, which creates a reciprocal relationship that I think is the foundation for establishing an education for students. The students I work with know I want the best for them, that everything I do for them is a gift for them because I care about them and want them to succeed.I got my education at the University of California, San Diego, where I majored in history and psychology. I stayed at UCSD for graduate school to earn a multiple subject teaching credential and a Master in Education. I have a supplementary authorization to teach social studies in all grades.My favorite subject is history because I find the truth to be so much more fascinating than fiction. But, I tutor in all subjects in elementary and middle school. I tutor in history and writing in high school.In my free time, I enjoy playing golf, ultimate frisbee, and racquetball. I especially enjoy traveling and have been to sixty countries.

I'm in my 2nd year of medical school at the University of Central Florida. I previously graduated Cum Laude from the University of California, San Diego with a degree in Human Biology and Education Studies. I was an Academic Mentor for underprivileged San Diego communities. I was also a Teaching Assistant for the Biology department at UCSD. I have taught in a variety of settings; from one-on-one tutoring to review sessions for 300 people in a lecture hall. I primarily tutor MCAT, SAT, and the SAT.In my experience, rather than the Tutor being an all-knowing power who lectures on the information, the most beneficial environment for the student is one that feels like a conversation. By creating a dynamic atmosphere between Tutor and student, the student will be able to truly understand the material. Constant collaboration is the key to a student's success and I have spent years mastering this skill.My interests, outside of teaching, include sports, music, and international work. I personally understand the everyday challenges that student athletes must overcome and I can tailor my approach to best fit their academic needs. On top of sports, I have spent my entire life learning either the piano, guitar, or ukulele. I traveled to Italy and spent two weeks there to sing for the Pope. I recently completed a ten day medical mission in Vietnam, providing primary health care and aiding the surgery team for ten or more hours each day.
