Today the student reviewed his homework, then he practiced the lesson's vocabulary and the preterit tense by translating sentences using the past. Grasping the conjugation of the preterit tense was difficult. I gave him the a Spanish study program to help him continue to practice until our next lesson.

This was an intense test review. We again dealt with finding intercepts and graphical representation with functions. We dealt with piecewise, first, second, and third order equations containing absolute values, holes, horizontal and vertical shifts, stretches and compressions, as well as reflections about the x axis, y axis, origin, and x=y line.

This was my first session working with this student and we started with her reading aloud from two books of her choice. She was struggling with some unfamiliar words but she was working hard to slowly sound out the words. She was happy to work on her reading. She's going to continue reading Ivy and Bean for 20 minutes each night as her reading homework. And she and I will continue reading Matilda together during our next session.

The student spent our first hour together taking and grading a practice English portion of the test. She scored 5 points higher than her score on the September test! This success is primarily due to our shift in strategy, where she does everything that is very easy first, and then spends her remaining time with the harder questions. This shift, though subtle, clearly makes a big difference for how the flow of the test goes. In the second hour, we reviewed a few of the questions she did miss, and finished going over the last math practice test.

We continued our work on double integrals; most of them were relatively easy. The last one was a bit confusing because it was a triple integral for volume. I explained that a double integral is for surfaces, but a triple is for planes. She had no problem with any of them. We finished with a review of quadric surfaces and how to tell which one is which from their formulas.

The student and I met for an hour and discussed how we will structure our sessions. We reviewed a worksheet he had for preterite vs imperfect verb conjugation. He will contact me by Sunday to let me know what subject matter he would like me to prepare material regarding for next Tuesday's session.
