I am NYC based educator and director. During my time as an educator, I have worked with many different kinds of learners and adjusted my approach to meet the needs of the students. I have worked with students from the Bronx to Brooklyn to Minneapolis, with at risk youths, students with both learning and social disabilities and accelerated learners. I have a lot of experience working off of my students' creativity and energy. I am always responding to them and in the best moments learning alongside them.My greatest strength as an educator is meeting each of my students on their own terms seeing them as individuals with their own unique strengths and weaknesses. My work has always been centered around writing. My professional life has had me write for marketing campaigns and grant proposals. As well as being a produced playwright, I have worked with many writers to strengthen their own voice, develop structure and fine tune the nitty gritty practicals of the writing process. I have worked with novelists, essayists and poets to help them go deeper and to strengthen the mechanics of their writing.I am able to teach mechanics, vocabulary and grammar, all while helping lead the student through writing as a form of thinking and discovery. I will help any student who is working on essays, preparing for college admissions, wrestling with creative writing assignments, struggling with reading comprehension or preparing for a test.

As a student myself who has used tutoring resources many times, I know the need for good teachers to help students succeed, and I am passionate about giving back these lessons the same way I was able to receive them! I have taught students of many different ages from as little as 6 years old to as old as 16/17. I love teaching all ages in subjects such as reading and math, especially when it comes to the SATs. My philosophy is to never assume. I approach every student as a blank slate where I do not know about their prior knowledge, and as such, I make it a point to explain everything I teach thoroughly to ensure they have a strong foundation. With patience and understanding, I grow with my students to assist them in getting the most possible out of their education with me.
My higher education began at Fordham University in Bronx, New York. I attended Fordham from 1980-1984 earning a B.A. degree in English. I minored in Philosophy there as well. My education continued at CW Post University in Brookville, New York. I attended C.W. Post from 1994-1996 and earned an M.A. degree in TESOL, or more simply ESL, Teacher of English as a Second Language. During the twelve years between my undergraduate and graduate work I was a rock and roll musician and songwriter in a group called "The Chilly Dogs." My group released an album in 1987 and we toured The United States and Canada in support of the record. After The Chilly Dogs broke up in 1990, I joined a Lithuanian Polka Band called "She and the Three Amber Men," and I got to tour Lithuania, Australia, and The United States with this group. I also recorded an album with an artist called "Paleface" in 1993 and it did not sell many copies, so I decided to become a teacher as I always loved working with kids. I decided to become an ESL teacher because I myself spoke only Lithuanian when I entered kindergarten in 1967, when there was no such thing as ESL in schools yet. I got teased and harassed some by the kids that were fluent in English, and it wasn't a fun time for me for a few years until I learned English.I got my first teaching job at The New York City Dept. of Education in December of 1995 as an ESL teacher. I taught ESL for the next nineteen years not only in school. Many of the newly arrived kids knew very little or no English at all and their parents often asked me if I could tutor their kids privately after or before school, sometimes even on the weekends. Many of the newly arrived parents of the kids I was teaching also asked me to tutor them in English. I really loved my job because I felt that I was a very important part of the newly arrived students' and their parents lives. When I got to tutor I felt that I was getting closer to my kids than teachers of other subjects would. I also didn't only tutor my kids in ESL. They came to my class for ESL once or twice a day and then had to go to their other four "core" subject classes, Science, Math, Social Studies, and English. I had to find out from the other teachers how my kids were doing in their other classes, and then I had to decide how I could best help them with those classes while they were in my class. I got interested in the other subjects the kids were taking and learned a lot about them.I am able to tutor in at least ESL and the four "core" subjects my kids took and did so. I really don't have a favorite subject to tutor and don't want to sound arrogant, but I am interested in basically anything from A stronauts to Z ebras and once I get interested in some new subject, my mother was a librarian, and she can still get me books on any subject I become interested in. My dad was the Head of Engineering at Grumman and is now an inventor, and whenever I go over my parents' house I find that he can shut my car off from inside the house, and I don't know what he's exactly up to now, but my phone doesn't work anywhere near my house and he won't tell me why. He has told me that since he worked at Grumman he has had top secret clearance. Recently I punched in my last name, "Janusas" into Google, and up came a photo of a UFO in a newspaper from Brazil called "The Janusas Photo." You can try it yourselves, and you'll see what I saw. I actually printed out the article I accidentally "Googled" and made copies of it for my ESL kids for a lesson. They were extremely interested in what was written there, with my last name there, and I was quite amazed that my slightly above beginner level students were so interested in the picture and the article that all I basically had to do during that class was sit back and watch them all become team players, getting into a big group on their own. They were gleaning English words they knew from each other and after twenty minutes were able to give me a summary in English of what this advanced adult article was about. That sums up my teaching/tutoring style. The kids are just like me...If they become really fascinated and challenged by something, I feel like my job is almost done. I may have to guide or help the students or student some, but if this becomes the case, both the student and teacher are reaching their maximum potential. This kind of interest is what I strive for every time a have to put a lesson together and teach or tutor.
I have been tutoring since I was a college student. At that point, I taught high school students and helped them to excel on the SAT/ACT as well as in the various Regents exams. I graduated summa cum laude from Touro College, and now I am a graduate student working towards my PhD in history and teaching college part-time.I have had the opportunity to teach hundreds of students in a college classroom. I have really enjoyed this experience, but I have found that many smart, motivated students lack the skills they need to maintain a strong GPA in college. To address this problem, I began to focus my high school tutoring on writing and critical analysis skills, and I worked one-on-one with some of my college students. I developed a system that focuses on developing reading comprehension, organized writing, and analytical thinking. These skills enable you to succeed on standardized tests like the SAT, but also in English and humanities classes. This is also what I use to prepare students for the PSAT. Trust me, it works! Not only did I score 2220 on the SAT, but my PSAT score helped me to become a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist.I care deeply about what I do, but I think what really distinguishes me from many other tutors is my flexibility and commitment to the individual. I work around my students' individual needs and learning styles so that hardworking students can achieve the academic success they deserve!
Hello! My name is Justin Hyland and I am a graduate of Fordham University and the University of Connecticut School of Law. My areas of knowledge include legal academics, bar exam prep, and English language and literature.
My mission is to inspire students to believe in themselves. I teach students with compassion and patience. I work towards helping students progress by meeting their intellectual and emotional needs. I firmly believe in the implementation of effective practices and fostering an environment that encourages student growth and positive results. Motivating students to be independent thinkers and apply the strategies taught to them will help them overcome challenges. In doing this, students are able to accomplish their goals. I truly enjoy working with students to help them excel and achieve their highest potential.

I have tutored since the 7th grade and I love to help people understand concepts that they previously struggled with. I believe that curating a unique approach for each individual is important in their advancement. Everybody is different and therefore their way of learning will be different too! This has helped many of my students raise their grades and confidence when it comes to their studies. In my free time, I enjoy watching cooking videos on YouTube and going to the gym!
I've loved history for as long as I can remember, and I look forward to sharing that love with you and helping you through your classes and exams! For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to be a teacher. I love seeing a students eyes light up when they are learning. I have volunteered as a teaching assistant and after school helper for two years, where I have been able to observe teachers and their teaching styles while also being given the opportunity to offer extra help to students who may need it. During my time as a teaching assistant, I have helped students 1st-3rd grade, in Math, English, Writing, and Religion. In addition to volunteering, I am now a teachers aid in a $th grade special education classroom. I am currently a junior at Fordham University working towards a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and I am on the track to get a Master's in Early Childhood Education.

I graduated from Fordham University with a BA in International Political Economy and Spanish Language and Literature as well as a Business Minor. I have 10+ years of experience working with students as a teacher, tutor, and mentor. I returned to the US this past summer after working as an ESL Teaching Assistant for the last 3 years in Madrid, Spain. During my time in Spain, I worked on my own mastery of the Spanish language while teaching students ranging from preschool age to adults. I taught English in primary and secondary schools and also provided one to one in-home tutoring. I love teaching language because it gives the leaner many opportunities to connect with people all over the world on a different level. I feel that the discipline and dedication put forth to learn a new language shows a great deal of respect for the native speakers and their culture. I strive to make each session with my students fun, educational, and tailored to their specific goals. I like to emphasize each student's personal growth. It doesn't matter if the student is a beginner; the most important part is seeing self- improvement. In my free time I enjoy traveling, trivia games, karaoke and staying fit.
I was a Teaching Assistant at the Gabelli School of Business at Fordham University working as an editor and TA for English essay grading, from 2013 to 2014. I was a tutor at the Rosedale Achievement Center for Girls during the spring of 2012. I taught health classes to freshman at Bronx public high schools from 2010-2011. I was an assistant violin teacher at the Mind Builders Creative Academy from 2011 to 2014.I am a great tutor because I help students break down complicated and difficult assignments into manageable tasks and goals. I am committed to helping students fully comprehend and understand the information they need to learn. This is because I believe students perform best in school when they understand concepts instead of using memorization, which does not provide a stable foundation for more complex work in the future. I love working with young people and helping them to link their coursework to their own personal development and the world they live in.

I'm a budding Physicist and I believe that a good understanding of the physical laws which govern our universe is not only key for a good outlook on life, but makes a number of things in life more enjoyable. About myself: I'm from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic originally and came to New York when I was three (I've been here 19 years - Go Yanks!). I play the guitar (I love the Blues) and am a baseball enthusiast. I am fluently bilingual (English and Spanish) and as such can teach what I know in both languages.I've recently received a degree in Physics (B.S) from Fordham U. in The Bronx. At Fordham, the Physics Department requires that all upperclassmen be available for tutoring in the classes they've succeeded in, meaning that I've tutored in several areas of Physics and Math for two consecutive years. I've also had the pleasure of tutoring my younger siblings in anything they need help with (I have a 9 yr. old sister who loves Science, and I believe I've played at least a small role in that). I love tutoring; many see tutoring as a service provided by one party to another, but it has great benefits for the tutor as well. Through tutoring at Fordham and unprofessionally (family and friends) I've learned how to communicate physical and mathematical theories at several levels of comprehension, and my understanding of the subject matter has often improved as a result. My general approach in tutoring physics and math is to emphasize the theory behind whatever subject the student may be dealing with. Once a student firmly understands a physical or mathematical theory it is much easier to understand the formulas and applications behind the theory. Examples are key in understanding this type of subject matter and as such I greatly emphasize examples as well. I am very patient when it comes to relaying the knowledge I have because I understand how difficult Math and Science may be for some (Science was not necessarily my strong suit in High School).

I began tutoring as an undergraduate, for history, French, German, and Latin. I also have extensive experience editing English essays (my own, those of my peers, and those of my students.) I spend a lot of time thinking about these subjects, and about how to help others understand them better. When I'm not doing academic work, I enjoy experimenting in the kitchen and exploring on my bicycle. I attempt to bring the same creativity and adventurousness to tutoring as I do to these pursuits.
Diana was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. She attended Cerritos Community College and majored in Economics and accounting while working at Bank of America and a retail shoe store to get her through school. During that time she also earned her Medical Billing certification and was highly involved in the community through Project HOPE, Scholar Honor Society, and as Vice-President of the Business Club. After three years she transferred to the University of California, Santa Barbara and became involved in education through The Family Literacy Program where she worked with undocumented elementary students. Her interest in Chicano Studies and education grew thanks to a course on educational barriers and the teachings of Brazilian educator Paulo Freire. Working as an Elementary Teaching Assistant, one special student made her want to become an educator focusing on students with learning disabilities. She switched her major to Psychology to better understand human growth and development. That year she became a research assistant to her professor and worked with at-risk adolescents in a high school in Santa Barbara County. Diana learned about Teach for America that same year and felt that TFA's values and mission were aligned with her own, which brought her to New York City classrooms. She has a newly obtained Masters Degree from Fordham University in Teaching Exceptional Adolescents grades 7-12. She's taught 6th, 7th, and 8th grade math at a middle school in Brooklyn. She has taught Algebra for the past three years and is currently working at a high school in Manhattan. On her spare time she enjoys tutoring any struggling learner in Mathematics. When shes not in the classroom or tutoring, Diana enjoys reading a good book, Sunday brunch, authentic Mexican food, and meeting new friends.

I'm an educator with a passion for learning and giving back. I break skills into clear, manageable steps and use patience, encouragement, and strategies that build confidence fast. Wether you're preparing for exams, catching up on fundamentals, or aiming higher, I personalize each session so students leave understanding-- and believing they can do it.
I fully believe that every student should have equal access to quality and engaging education. I believe that access to a tutor allows a student that extra assistance to help them stick out in the classroom and excel over any academic challenge. After completing my Bachelors of Science in Biology and Psychology with a minor in Biomedical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA, I moved to New York City to begin my role as a teacher. For the past year, I have worked as a high school chemistry teacher at an NYC Department of Education public school in the Bronx. I love teaching and helping students find their "ah-ha" moments in both science and math. I know that these are challenging subjects but I know that every student has the ability to be successful given the right practice and support. I am currently pursuing my Masters of Education from Fordham University. Outside of school, I love to stay active outdoors, sing, and see Broadway shows.
I am a graduate of Fordham University, where I received a B.A. in History with a minor in mathematics. I have spent 8 years as an educator; seeing knowledge and wisdom imparted on the minds of others, as well as witnessing progression in analytical and critical thinking skills is a passion of mine. As an undergraduate, I taught health classes at underfunded high schools in the Bronx, NY. Upon graduating, I went on to teach high school math for 5 years in both Philadelphia and Chicago, simultaneously receiving an M.Ed. in secondary education, mathematics. Every year, my students surpassed school-wide growth goals on standardized math tests, including the ACT and PSAT.I have now returned to my home-state of North Carolina to pursue a Ph.D. in History. While I work on this endeavor, I am available to tutor Math, History, and English. When I'm not tutoring, I enjoy tearing through books, stumbling through being an adult learner of piano, hiking, practicing yoga, and being in good company.
I am a graduate of Harvard University, Fordham University, and the Mindful Schools' Yearlong Certification Program in Mindfulness* Education. During my undergraduate years at Harvard, I studied Sociology and African Studies and spent a semester studying and discovering another culture in Accra, Ghana, in West Africa. After working in Ghana for a year after graduation, I returned to the United States, received my Master's from Fordham through the New York City Teaching Fellows program, and spent the last six years teaching a wide range of subjects, including mindfulness, in Brooklyn public middle and high schools. I have also worked as a teacher trainer and coach. Right now, I am applying to doctoral programs, teaching mindfulness to people of all ages (both one-on-one and in groups), and tutoring. My passion lies in helping students achieve their potential by providing high-quality, tailored instruction coupled with skillful, compassionate attention to the variety of factors that affect each student's ability to succeed, such as environmental stressors and self-limiting beliefs. I enjoy tutoring students in anything Englishrelated, especially college and grad school personal statement writing and academic writing in general, as well as middle school math, pre-algebra, and algebra. In my spare time, I love to dance, learn languages, attend yoga classes, read about anything and everything, drink tea, and hear people's life stories.*Mindfulness refers to paying nonjudgmental, compassionate attention to whatever arises in one's moment-to-moment experience, such as thoughts and feelings, training people to become more aware of what they are experiencing, replacing impulsive reactions with more thoughtful responses. Research has found that mindfulness training has a significant effect on students' and teachers' focus, stress management, impulse control, and relationships.

As a tutor, I strive to help students attain comprehension and learn how to approach subjects that may seem daunting at first. During my time as an undergraduate, I volunteered as a tutor for middle school students as part of a joint athletic and academic after school program. I am excited to be a tutor for Varsity Tutors. I have a Biology/Spanish degree from Fordham University and have since worked as a New York City high school Biology teacher as well as in biological research. In addition to running and exploring the city in my spare time, I am a mentor for a New York City program that boasts 100% college acceptance rate for participating students. In high school, I received scores on my PSAT/SAT that helped me get into a great college and earn a full-tuition National Merit Scholarship. Through that process, I learned many tricks to raise standardized test scores and to really use the results to my best advantage. I also like to help students with all subjects and in particular, Science, Math, Writing, Regents exams, high school entrance exams, and PSAT/SAT. As a teacher, I understood first hand that everyone learns in different ways and at different ability levels, but every student can achieve at their best when they receive personalized instruction tailored to their needs and interests. As a tutor, I hope to help students throughout the city understand how they can best perform in school and on tests to achieve their academic and personal goals.
Victoria Bourgeois-Conti is a math major in the Fordham University Honors Program. She found a love for teaching math when she began volunteer tutoring her freshman year of high school, and she is passionate about providing students the support they need to understand a concept. She believes in learning through questions and conversation, and aims to break each topic into its most clear and simple form. Victoria is a very patient and positive tutor who would love to meet you! (SAT: 1600, ACT: 36, AP Calc BC: 5)
I graduated with summa cum laude from the Honors Program at Fordham University with a B.S. in Psychology with minors in Political Science, Spanish, and History. I have a wide variety of past tutoring experience starting when I was quite young. For the past four years I have worked as a peer tutor through the Higher Education Opportunity Program at Fordham as well as a tutor for elementary-high school students at a private tutoring center in the Bronx. While studying in Spain last year, I was able to work as an English instructor in a bilingual high school in Granada. I also worked through the Americorps program Jumpstart! to built literacy skills in younger children. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about English, Literature, Spanish, and History. I absolutely love helping students improve their writing abilities from the planning stages to editing their essays. Standardized testing, while not something most students look forward to, seems to be one of the areas in which we can see the most timely and remarkable improvements in skill. I feel very strongly about education and will likely enter a PhD program combining Psychology and Pubic Policy to work on education reform next year. I hope to impart some of my own excitement about learning to all the students I have the opportunity to work with. When I'm not at work at my job as the project director on a study on sleep and academic performance in adolescents, I love to read and spend time outdoors, hiking, and enjoying nature.
I am a dedicated teacher from New York City currently located in Spain. I received my MST in Childhood General and Childhood Special Education. In addition to engaging in private tutoring, I have also worked in private schools in the Manhattan area.I encourage my students to develop their questioning skills and take control of their learning. My proudest moments as a teacher are when a child goes home and independently researches or reads about a topic because a lesson has piqued their curiosity. In addition, school content should be both challenging and applicable to the students experience outside the classroom. Delpit argues for this dual aspect of learning that is both relevant and challenging in her work Multiplication is for White People.
I am a teacher passionate about motivating students and investing them in their education to meet their goals and succeed. I have a Masters of Science in Teaching Childhood Education and Special Education, and a background in Political Science and History. I was a teacher for two years in the New York City Department of Education, and over those two years I helped my students attain an average reading growth of 1.5 years/year for each student, and an average math level proficiency growth of 1.3 years/year per student. I have experience teaching students with a wide array of learning needs, and have experience motivating students to enjoy learning and feel inspired to achieve their goals.I look forward to supporting student learning as a tutor with Varsity Tutors.
I'm a lawyer, writer, editor, and self-professed grammar nerd. I've always had a passion for writing. I was the kid in high school who my English teacher appointed to check other students' assignments (true story!). I received a degree in English from the University of Michigan and a law degree from Fordham University School of Law. In law school, I served as an associate editor for a law journal and wrote briefs for the moot court board. During my 27 year legal career, I've written hundreds of legal briefs, half a dozen legal articles, and even a traditionally-published mystery novel. I also maintain a blog on my website. I enjoy sharing my passions with others, so for several years I taught as an adjunct professor at a local law school and have worked extensively with my own two children (ages 20 and 17) throughout their educations. I take a friendly, laid-back approach to teaching, because students won't learn if they're not comfortable and engaged. Whether your needs are simple - such as general help with writing answers to essay questions or gaining a better understanding of punctuation - or more complex - such as writing a research paper or understanding how to use style guides, I can help. Plus, I've earned an editing certificate from the Poynter Institute and have edited professionally for a number of years. I can assist with all your editing needs. Finally, if you need help with legal research or legal writing, I'm your woman. I've been doing both for almost thirty years. Let me know how I can help you!
