I am passionate about helping students because without a thorough education, I would not be the person I am today. Education was at first something handed down to me from figures of authority. The more I studied and applied myself, however, a feeling ownership and agency began to develop. Education was less something handed down to me, and more something which I owed that I could engage in at any time. I want to help students discover how fun and how immeasurably valuable education can be, not because an authority figure told them so, but because they know this in their own heart. So far I've tried to impart this idea to students at CitySquash in the Bronx, and Harlem RBI in Manhattan, two programs which blend tutoring instruction and homework help with sports. Tutoring sessions were one-on-one for one to two hours per week.I received my Bachelors in America Studies and in Communication and Media Studies from Fordham College Rose Hill in the Bronx. I'm saving money so that I can eventually enter a masters program in either Journalism, or History. I tutor the subjects of History (European, American, World - high school and AP level) and Language Arts (reading comp, writing, language and literature - high school and AP level). My favorite subject to tutor is American history. Bob Marley once said "A people without the knowledge of their past history and culture is like a tree without roots." As Americans (no matter when we arrived to this land) we need to understand thoroughly our history, so that we do not repeat the mistakes of the past. We must see historical trends so that we can anticipate the future. We must nurture and grow our tree, and to do so we must know our roots. My teaching philosophy revolves around the student learning to lead by himself or herself. Tutoring is temporary, and a student must learn to learn. Memorizing information is great for passing tests, but mastering methods of learning will help a student to succeed throughout his or her entire lifetime. So I try to show students how to learn more than just what to learn.Outside of academia, I love music - reggae music, jazz music, hip hop music, electronic music, all music. I also play the drums, and attend concerts whenever I have the time and money. I enjoy practicing yoga, taking hikes and exploring New York's Hudson Valley. I devour books and one day want to write my own.

I'm a graduate from Fordham University with a B.S. in Computer Science and a B.A. in music, with a minor in Mathematics. I have an extensive background in computer science and mathematics as well as the humanities in general. My teaching interests are wide-ranging, including computer science, reading, writing, and math. I'm also a great test-taker, and have been helpful in the past to students in preparing for a panoply of tests, from high school level to higher ed.Having grown up having to mostly teach myself from textbooks rather than learning from teachers, as well as tutoring students who were dealing with ADHD and other learning disabilities, I had to work hard to develop learning and organizational strategies to keep myself on task. As a result, I'm extremely comfortable working with students with complex needs to find innovative learning tools for success. There's no right way to learn, and there are as many strategies as there are people in the world. In this way, I like to encourage students to use whatever methods grant them success.I love to read, play music (alto sax and piano), run, and dabble in electronic music production. Let's get in touch!
Hiya! My name is Joe Rozek and I would like to be your tutor. In the past I studied philosophy at Vassar College, ecology at Fordham University and then at Lehigh University I had a brief stint as a PhD student in evolutionary biology. There I quickly found out that I was more keen on teaching than I was on doing research and have since transferred to obtain my teaching certificate in high school biology. Despite my many years in biology, I never found it to be easy. Science is hard. There's a great deal of memorization associated with the subject, as well as difficult concepts and esoteric terminology. Let me help you by lending you my expertise in effectively studying and learning biology.
As an educator, I am deeply committed to empowering students to reach their full potential and achieve academic success. With a passion for teaching and a belief in the transformative power of education, I strive to create a supportive and engaging learning environment where every student feels valued and encouraged. My approach is student-centered, tailoring instruction to meet the unique needs and learning styles of each individual. Whether it's breaking down complex concepts, providing additional practice, or offering guidance and support, I am committed to helping students overcome challenges and build confidence in their abilities. With patience, empathy, and a genuine enthusiasm for learning, I am excited to embark on this journey of academic growth and discovery with my students.
I am an academically accomplished tutor who has more than six years of experience tutoring high school math and science. After spending the past two years studying medicine I realized that I am more passionate about education. In the past, I have tutored high school math up to calculus along with biology and chemistry up to the introductory college courses. I took the general SAT, SAT Math level II, SAT French, the GRE and the MCAT. I have also become proficient in human anatomy, microbiology and biochemistry.I believe that all students deserve excellent tutors who cater to their learning styles and challenge and encourage them to become proficient independent learners. Tutoring is a combination of teaching and mentoring and I strive to offer students the knowledge and skills they need to become academically confident and competitive. In my free time, I enjoy practicing yoga and dance. I am also into boxing. My favorite TV show right now is Game of Thrones! I love my family and friends and I enjoy spending time with them. I have the best siblings ever!
I recently graduated from Fordham University with a bachelor of arts in economics and philosophy. While in college, I enrolled in a wide variety of courses and received an extensive interdisciplinary education. My experience at Fordham demonstrated firsthand the value education has in helping people understand difficult concepts and grasp the connections between ideas from different academic subjects. As a tutor, I strive to help students attain comprehension and learn how to approach subjects that may seem daunting at first. During my time as an undergraduate, I volunteered as a tutor for middle school students as part of a joint athletic and academic after school program. I am most passionate about helping people learn history, social sciences, and mathematics. I also assist with standardized test prep, primarily with the Reading and Writing sections of the exams. In my spare time, I enjoy photography, hiking and other outdoor activities, and reading about philosophy, evolutionary biology, and human history.
I am an attorney. I have tutored children for many years as I am an avid learner. Two of my own children have some learning issues and I have worked with them to achieve success. This gave me the ability to tutor other children as I have seen what works with students and what does not work. The key to academic success is confidence. Without confidence there can be no progress.I give each child the tools that they need to boost their confidence and achieve success academically
My practice is founded in the belief that critical thinking will always benefit the student greater than memorization. Therefore I spend my time show my students how to think and deconstruct problems instead of having them memorize the answers. This method has taken my student far beyond the classroom and has given them the tools to achieve their dreams.
For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to be a teacher. I love seeing a students eyes light up when they are learning. I have volunteered as a teaching assistant and after school helper for two years, where I have been able to observe teachers and their teaching styles while also being given the opportunity to offer extra help to students who may need it. During my time as a teaching assistant, I have helped students 1st-3rd grade, in Math, English, Writing, and Religion. In addition to volunteering, I am now a teachers aid in a $th grade special education classroom. I am currently a junior at Fordham University working towards a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and I am on the track to get a Master's in Early Childhood Education.
I believe that all children have the right and access to a great education that helps them reach their maximum potential so that they may live choice filled lives.I believe it is important to set goals with students and their families and frequently monitor on the progress students are making towards their individual goals. Students thrive when they receive direct instruction. I pride myself in collecting data and using that data to inform instruction so that it is tailored to meet the needs of the student.
I have several years of tutoring experience and formal academic teaching experience across various educational levels, including undergraduate and graduate students.
I graduated from Georgetown University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Government and from Fordham University School of Law with a Juris Doctor degree. I have ten years of experience as a volunteer and private tutor to high school, undergraduate, and graduate students. I have tutored a variety of subjects ranging from math and science to standardized testing, but I especially enjoy tutoring in the areas of English, literature, and writing.I believe in creating a specialized tutoring plan to address the particular needs of my student. My emphasis is on creative (and hopefully fun) learning techniques that engage my student and help him or her confront problem-solving in a way that best suits his or her learning style. When I am not tutoring, I enjoy reading fiction, going to the movies, and spending time with my friends and family in the sunshine.
I am a graduate of Mercy College and Fordham University. At Mercy College, I received my MS in Urban Education with a concentration in special education. As for my undergraduate studies, I received a BA in Political Science and Spanish Studies with a minor in Latin American Studies. My work experience includes over three years of teaching experience. During that time, I created lesson plans, assessed data, and planned out goals for my students. My expertise is in Spanish and Math, but I have taught ELA, social studies, and science. Moreover, one of my specialties is preparing students for the NYS exams including the REGENTS exams. The teaching philosophy I find most effective is to customize lessons based on the student's interests and learning style. In my spare time, I play tennis and volleyball.
I am a graduate of Fordham University, with a double major BA in Economics and French Language and Literature. I have been tutoring students in English, French, Math, and standardized test prep for over six years, and I especially love teaching in Economics, History, and Literature. As a US Presidential Scholar who earned a 35 out of 36 on my ACT, I am most actively seeking students for ACT tutoring as well as general college prep including college applications, scholarship search, and financial aid application assistance.
I am currently an undergraduate student pursuing a Computer Science degree at Fordham University. This is my first year tutoring as my only real experience was helping classmates do their homework. However, when it comes with teaching others math, I've always held the belief that people need to learn each individual step in a mathematical problem. I believe this is something that can improve student's understanding in math. I also make sure students are engaged and have fun with learning math.
Hello! My name is Justin Hyland and I am a graduate of Fordham University and the University of Connecticut School of Law. My areas of knowledge include legal academics, bar exam prep, and English language and literature.
I am a graduate of Fordham University. I received my Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in Communications. Since graduation I have been working as a teaching assistant at Fordham High School for the Arts under Blue Engine, an educational service affiliated with Americorps. Even before college I was a teaching assistant, tutor, and mentor to 6-8th graders under the REACH Program for Regis High School which serves academically gifted students whose families are in financial need. Interestingly enough, I too was once a student in the REACH Program. This is where my love of education and belief that a strong educational background is essential to advancing in life and improving one's circumstances. As an English tutor, I believe that reading comprehension and writing skills are essential to advancing in literary analysis as well as communicational skills. Through scaffolding questioning, deep text readings, and rigorous analytical writing, I believe any student can become a competent English student and communicator. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, film and television, as well as musical criticism.
I was a Teaching Assistant at the Gabelli School of Business at Fordham University working as an editor and TA for English essay grading, from 2013 to 2014. I was a tutor at the Rosedale Achievement Center for Girls during the spring of 2012. I taught health classes to freshman at Bronx public high schools from 2010-2011. I was an assistant violin teacher at the Mind Builders Creative Academy from 2011 to 2014.I am a great tutor because I help students break down complicated and difficult assignments into manageable tasks and goals. I am committed to helping students fully comprehend and understand the information they need to learn. This is because I believe students perform best in school when they understand concepts instead of using memorization, which does not provide a stable foundation for more complex work in the future. I love working with young people and helping them to link their coursework to their own personal development and the world they live in.
I am passionate about helping students build confidence in their academic abilities, especially when learning feels overwhelming. As someone with ADHD, a processing disorder, and testing anxiety, I understand the challenges many students face in the classroom. I also understand the growth that comes from developing effective strategies and learning how to adapt. I strive to create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, taking risks, and viewing mistakes as part of the learning process. I believe problem-solving is a critical life skill that extends beyond any single subject. My goal is not only to improve academic performance, but to help students recognize their own resilience, capability, and potential.

I conducted my graduate studies at Fordham University and received an M.S. in Secondary Science Education. I am currently certified in New York State for Biology 7 - 12 and am pursuing a secondary certification in SPED 7 - 12.My approach to tutoring is simple: learning does not come easily if it cannot be made digestible. In this light, I employ a range of techniques to engage and drive my students towards their own litmus of success. I love integrating games, technology, or a points system to support students. If the first approach does not work, I am open and flexible to hearing feedback from the students and their parents in the interest of maximizing student learning. While my background is in secondary science education, my passion is in literacy education. I have worked with students from as young as Kindergarten through the college level in reading with fluency and a critical/analytical eye. This has lended me naturally into a writing tutor, allowing me to coach my students into becoming stronger writers. In working with students at the elementary level, I have also had the opportunity to explore Common Core expectations in ELA and Mathematics. For the past year, I have worked as a high school chemistry teacher at an NYC Department of Education public school in the Bronx. I have been tutoring since I was a college student. At that point, I taught high school students and helped them to excel on the SAT/ACT as well as in the various Regents exams. I graduated summa cum laude from Touro College, and now I am a graduate student working towards my PhD in history and teaching college part-time.I have had the opportunity to teach hundreds of students in a college classroom. I have really enjoyed this experience, but I have found that many smart, motivated students lack the skills they need to maintain a strong GPA in college. To address this problem, I began to focus my high school tutoring on writing and critical analysis skills, and I worked one-on-one with some of my college students. I developed a system that focuses on developing reading comprehension, organized writing, and analytical thinking. These skills enable you to succeed on standardized tests like the SAT, but also in English and humanities classes. This is also what I use to prepare students for the PSAT. Trust me, it works! Not only did I score 2220 on the SAT, but my PSAT score helped me to become a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist.I care deeply about what I do, but I think what really distinguishes me from many other tutors is my flexibility and commitment to the individual. I work around my students' individual needs and learning styles so that hardworking students can achieve the academic success they deserve!

I have experience teaching students with a wide array of learning needs, and have experience motivating students to enjoy learning and feel inspired to achieve their goals.I look forward to supporting student learning as a tutor with Varsity Tutors.
My love affair with language began in 8th grade when, as I read short stories, I saw how word-crafting could issue in what I call 3-D thinking. Good writing breathes sharp life into ideas, fosters synergy across them while creating new thought patterns for writer and reader. Throughout my 25 years of teaching and tutoring college students at an Ivy League university and at other local institutions guiding them through class essays, research projects, honors and masters theses, and graduate school personal statements--I always found joy in helping students discover what they wanted to sayand to express themselves coherently and persuasively. I hold a B.A. in English from Fordham University summa cum laude and in 1998 I earned a Ph.D. in English Literature from the University of Pennsylvania. In the course of completing my doctoral project after a long pause from grad school to raise my son, I cultivated the ability, and empathy, to look at academic challenges resourcefully from both sides of the desk. Given that my research on Hamlet was highly interdisciplinary-- joyous and original--I have carried that intellectual exhilaration into all my work as a lecturer, writing specialist, tutor, academic advisor and administrator, always urging students to seek out more conceptual connections and to write as integratively as possible. Currently I am working part-time by choice, but my staunch resolve that the pen is mightier than the sword remains intact and never fails to excite me. I want to share my excitement, expertise, and love of writing with you--and am ready to motivate you and empower you, as I have done so for numerous students, to write your best thinking!
I am a recent graduate of Fordham University, with a B.A. in Music and Philosophy. I have taken coursework in and have a great passion for all areas of learning, particularly in Humanities. As a Tutor, I have guided students through difficult texts and aided them with essay writing for three years. I have also tutored voluntarily, working with underprivileged youth, in SAT and college preparation. I am passionate about culture and the Arts; hence I teach a broad range of subjects, from Religious Studies to Music Theory. As my majors suggest, I am particularly strong with Philosophy and Music. What I love most of all, is learning new subjects for and with my students. My teaching style is dynamic. It's tailored to each student and subject. I work at whatever pace best suits them. I relate subject material to the student’s other interests to best engage him or her. The only things I keep the same for every student are the values I encourage: thoroughness and patience with regard to work ethic, curiosity and appreciation with regard to the material. Outside of tutoring, I like to listen to and compose music, read and write literature, play video games, and follow contemporary politics.
I have enjoyed "teaching" since I was a little girl. Through the years, I have helped my nieces and nephews with their schoolwork, science projects... I have also homeschooled my daughter during Covid, and now she is way ahead in her studies. I love spelling, reading, writing, reading comprehension, math... I have edited and proofread many of my husband's novels that he has written. I have helped elementary, junior high, high school and college aged students with numerous projects, reports, homework. I love teaching others, and I absolutely love when we achieve the results we set out to conquer. I have a Bachelor's degree in Sociology with a concentration in Criminology because I wanted to be a lawyer. However, teaching was always my dream and passion. This job would help me achieve my goals of helping others with their schoolwork.
I originally began college with intent of pursing a degree in Mathematics but quickly decided to dual-major in Mathematics and Economics in order to explore practical applications. While I continued my studies in liberal arts, slowly but surely I developed a passion for finance which guided me beginning my career at a multi-family office advising clients in portfolio management. While working in a number of roles through my 20s, I attained my CFA Charter. It would be my pleasure to work with you on any math, econ or financial endeavors towards the pursuit of your goals.

I come from an immigrant background so the stress for education is incredibly important to me. I graduated from Fordham University with a double major in Economics and History. After graduation I worked in accounting but I didn't find that line of work for me so I decided to pursue a career in law. I took the LSAT and now I am currently in the process of applying for Fall 2022 for law school.I found tutoring to be incredibly rewarding. I discovered my love for it when I had to help my younger family members as I was the oldest and I always the first to do something so I'd have to mentor those before me. I just find the best part about tutoring is when a student just gets it. When it finally all clicks. My philosophy is that I don't give up on students because I know all of them that come to me have the potential to succeed they just need a helping hand to lead them. Not everyone learns the same way it's why teachers and professors in a classroom setting can be ineffective. No one is incapable of learning.I have a passion for History and Writing but, I also really enjoy teaching the LSAT. I used to struggle with it in the beginning and I eventually grew to love the test and in turn I loved teaching the test. I know how stressful it can be but it is learnable and I intend to teach it.
My mission is to inspire students to believe in themselves. I teach students with compassion and patience. I work towards helping students progress by meeting their intellectual and emotional needs. I firmly believe in the implementation of effective practices and fostering an environment that encourages student growth and positive results. Motivating students to be independent thinkers and apply the strategies taught to them will help them overcome challenges. In doing this, students are able to accomplish their goals. I truly enjoy working with students to help them excel and achieve their highest potential.
I am excited to be a tutor for Varsity Tutors. I have a Biology/Spanish degree from Fordham University and have since worked as a New York City high school Biology teacher as well as in biological research. In addition to running and exploring the city in my spare time, I am a mentor for a New York City program that boasts 100% college acceptance rate for participating students. In high school, I received scores on my PSAT/SAT that helped me get into a great college and earn a full-tuition National Merit Scholarship. Through that process, I learned many tricks to raise standardized test scores and to really use the results to my best advantage. I also like to help students with all subjects and in particular, Science, Math, Writing, Regents exams, high school entrance exams, and PSAT/SAT. As a teacher, I understood first hand that everyone learns in different ways and at different ability levels, but every student can achieve at their best when they receive personalized instruction tailored to their needs and interests. As a tutor, I hope to help students throughout the city understand how they can best perform in school and on tests to achieve their academic and personal goals.
Diana was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. She attended Cerritos Community College and majored in Economics and accounting while working at Bank of America and a retail shoe store to get her through school. During that time she also earned her Medical Billing certification and was highly involved in the community through Project HOPE, Scholar Honor Society, and as Vice-President of the Business Club. After three years she transferred to the University of California, Santa Barbara and became involved in education through The Family Literacy Program where she worked with undocumented elementary students. Her interest in Chicano Studies and education grew thanks to a course on educational barriers and the teachings of Brazilian educator Paulo Freire. Working as an Elementary Teaching Assistant, one special student made her want to become an educator focusing on students with learning disabilities. She switched her major to Psychology to better understand human growth and development. That year she became a research assistant to her professor and worked with at-risk adolescents in a high school in Santa Barbara County. Diana learned about Teach for America that same year and felt that TFA's values and mission were aligned with her own, which brought her to New York City classrooms. She has a newly obtained Masters Degree from Fordham University in Teaching Exceptional Adolescents grades 7-12. She's taught 6th, 7th, and 8th grade math at a middle school in Brooklyn. She has taught Algebra for the past three years and is currently working at a high school in Manhattan. On her spare time she enjoys tutoring any struggling learner in Mathematics. When shes not in the classroom or tutoring, Diana enjoys reading a good book, Sunday brunch, authentic Mexican food, and meeting new friends.
