As an educator, I have always worked to teach my students principles and skills that can apply in many situations, both in the classroom and in their everyday lives. I live and work based on principles as well, and they are relatively simple. First and foremost: all students can learn. Some will struggle in some areas, but struggling does not indicate inability. I have personally worked with students who have been described as unable to function in a classroom, or incapable of meeting high expectations, and I have watched those students grow immensely when given the opportunity. The impact of a caring, positive environment of people who believe in a student cannot be overstated. One of my seventh graders, who had not grown at all as a reader after a year in a classroom setting, attended a small group summer program that I facilitated. Her teachers had become concerned that she may simply be stuck at her 3rd grade reading level. However, in a focused, small group setting, with appropriate support, she made 5 months of progress in two weeks. I could give numerous examples, but they all come back to the same point: all students can learn. My second principle relates to the first: high expectations and proper support are a pathway to success. High expectations are an educator's way of saying, "I believe in you" to their students. Throughout my career, when I have challenged my students, they have risen to meet it and walked away from the experience glowing with pride. I have directed middle school students performing Shakespeare and watched them go above and beyond to create a beautiful production. I have confronted a reading group with a book two years above their reading levels and seen them respond by growing rapidly as readers. When we expect greatness from our students, and support them on their path, we can see success that goes far beyond our initial impressions of their capabilities.

Education has been a passion of mine for quite some time. During college, I worked with Upward Bound – an incredible federal program that tutors and mentors high schoolers aspiring to be first generation college students. During my career, I’ve mentored students through several programs in the Greater New York Area. Whether it is as a tutor, coach or mentor – students have always been a part of my life as a professional and volunteer. My educational background is a BA in Political Psychology from Claremont McKenna College and an MA in Communications from Fairfield University. Written and verbal communication is a great strength of mine as both an academic and professional – English, History, the Social Sciences, etc. With that being said, I have worked with students of all ages on a variety of subjects. To me, mastery of a subject is a great accomplishment, but the greater goal should always be refining your broader skills as a student and scholar. These are the overarching characteristics that allow an individual to be adaptable and flourish in a variety of academic and professional environments. In my spare time, I like to stay active, travel and enjoy the outdoors.
Hello, I'm Bradley! I'm a recent Fairfield University graduate with a BA in History and minors in French and Philosophy. My teaching philosophy starts with understanding the student first then building a style around them. I've tutored French at university, taught French in France, and coached tennis to kids ages 8-15. I remain committed to helping students overcome their fears, making them more confident as people.
I started my journey while in high school, I took my first anatomy and physiology class and discovered that I wanted a career that would allow me to work with the human body. I was mostly interested in dentistry and orthodontics until I hurt my back in an offseason football workout. After I went to my Chiropractor I realized the importance of the structure of the spine and the function of the central nervous system. While in college I was named captain of our rugby team and enjoyed helping other learn and work together. I was a teacher assistant for an anatomy and physiology class during my time at Fairfield University. I continued my passion of helping others while at Palmer College of Chiropractic where I tutored the first quarter students in general anatomy where I aided them in understanding the anatomy with the use of cadavers. A short while later I was named the president of a chiropractic technique club called: Gonstead Technique. I plan on using my experience and knowledge to help others reach their goals and full potential.

My name is Andrew and I am currently working with Varsity Tutors while I finish my Ph.D. in Education at the University of Virginia. When it comes to learning, there is no attribute more valued than passion. My teaching philosophy revolves around the core idea that the student should be the one to find the answers they need. Rote memorization, reciting, and hurling out facts without context will always place second to a true desire to learn when it comes to succeeding in academics. Not only should the tutor and the student aim to understand a subject, they should also try to develop a love for it.

Teaching, travel, and culture have become a great love and ambition of mine after completing my TEFL teacher training in Paris, France in October 2011. Since, then I have taught private students and at schools both in New York City and in France, focusing on general English, ESL, and various standardized tests (TOEFL, IELTS, SAT/ACT),In addition to my teacher training, I am a writer, actor and performer, possessing excellent skills in communication and being in front of small or large groups of people. I have a burgeoning writing career, writing for various websites and working on a blog and novel.I achieve amazing satisfaction from inspiring others to learn and communicate. Overall, I enjoy the creative elements of teaching and using the student's interests to drive a passion and desire to learn. Amidst my minimal travels across the globe thus far, I have learned that education is the key to understanding and appreciating each other.
I love teaching! Even in the craziness of the pandemic, I am astounded at the resilience of my students and the flexibility of my colleagues. I would not want to repeat the past 18 months, but what I have taken away from it is knowing that I can make lessons engaging and entertaining, that games are a great way to teach and review content, and that building relationships with my students must be a top priority.I am a graduate of Fairfield University, where I majored in History and Education. I have a Masters' degree from the University of Connecticut in Educational Technology. I have been teaching 8th grade U.S. History for 17 years. Specifically, the time period I know the most about is early American history from the creation of the 13 Colonies to the Reconstruction Era.I also teach literacy skills throughout my curriculum, with a focus on reading comprehension, text analysis, and informational and argument writing. Clear communication skills - both verbal and written - are 21st century skills that all students can be successful with. Some students may just need a different approach, more time, or some extra practice to get there.
