My name is Andrew and I am currently working with Varsity Tutors while I finish my Ph.D. in Education at the University of Virginia. I have taught, tutored, and coached for over a decade in more than 30 countries. I was also a Division 1 athlete throughout college, managed an NGO in China, and mentored several students in both academic and non-academic areas since 2012, so I am familiar with the challenges of trying to balance several pursuits simultaneously. I look forward to talking!

Having taught in a variety of settings and worked with diverse populations such as incarcerated inmates, international adults and ivy league undergraduates, I have come to understand first hand that every student learns in his or her own unique way. My approach as a tutor is to listen carefully to the student and to try and understand where he or she is coming from. It is through this student-centered learning that I encourage the student to express themselves and to find meaning in the work. My background in English writing and education, and first hand as an undergraduate professor of Critical Writing, allows me to push my students to work hard on the subject at hand. I believe that all students are capable of writing well and performing well on the SAT, and my job is to coach and steer the student in the right direction.
Adaptable educator versed in collaborating with parents and students to best meet each individual's unique needs. Attentive to the physical, emotional and social needs of each student.
Beginning in September 2013, I returned to teaching at the College of Staten Island, where I successfully taught two sections of English 111. Prior to that, I had embarked on a career change as an attorney in 2001. I remain a barred attorney in the State of Connecticut, and while passionate about the law, my true calling is as an academic and teacher. My experience includes eight years of teaching Freshman Composition and Upper Division courses at Ohio State University and Capital University. While at OSU, I was selected as a teaching assistant for graduate level theory courses as well.I have participated in the School for Criticism and Theory at Dartmouth, and, generally, I have very strong teaching recommendations. A number of my students from this semester asked if I were available to teach English 152 following its precursor, English 111.Currently, I am teaching a section of World Literature: The Evolving Canon at CUNY (Brooklyn).I would be happy to share student essays and feedback upon request.
I am a second year medical student in the new MD program at Nova Southeastern University. I began tutoring students on a volunteer basis when I was in high school and was employed by a tutoring agency while in college. I have experience working with students in Math, Sciences (Biology & Chemistry), and Spanish and have experience tutoring students in Elementary, Middle, and High School as well as college. I also have experience with SAT and ACT prep as I obtained high scores on those standardized tests as well as the MCAT (medical school admissions exams). My goal is to help your student succeed. I like to help students move from a point where they need lessons and reteaching provided to a point where they become Masters of their own learning. Not only do I want students who work with me to gain competency in content, but I enjoy helping them learn how to identify areas of strength and weakness academically, ask good questions, and develop successful study habits which will help them do well in the future and excel in more than the topics I am tutoring them in. I hope to make the lessons fun and engaging, especially for students who are struggling so they have the motivation they need to succeed in school.I look forward to meeting you and working towards your goal of academic success together. Whether you want to catch up if you are falling behind, get ahead on a difficult topic, boost your scores on an exam, or learn something new just for fun, I am here to help you learn!Happy TutoringBrianna

"Mathematics is the language in which God wrote the Universe." Knowing how to use mathematics to solve problems is very important. I want to help students learn the mathematics they need to successfully solve the problems they encounter in their math courses and in life.
As an educator, I have always worked to teach my students principles and skills that can apply in many situations, both in the classroom and in their everyday lives. I live and work based on principles as well, and they are relatively simple. First and foremost: all students can learn. Some will struggle in some areas, but struggling does not indicate inability. I have personally worked with students who have been described as unable to function in a classroom, or incapable of meeting high expectations, and I have watched those students grow immensely when given the opportunity. The impact of a caring, positive environment of people who believe in a student cannot be overstated. One of my seventh graders, who had not grown at all as a reader after a year in a classroom setting, attended a small group summer program that I facilitated. Her teachers had become concerned that she may simply be stuck at her 3rd grade reading level. However, in a focused, small group setting, with appropriate support, she made 5 months of progress in two weeks. I could give numerous examples, but they all come back to the same point: all students can learn. My second principle relates to the first: high expectations and proper support are a pathway to success. High expectations are an educator's way of saying, "I believe in you" to their students. Throughout my career, when I have challenged my students, they have risen to meet it and walked away from the experience glowing with pride. I have directed middle school students performing Shakespeare and watched them go above and beyond to create a beautiful production. I have confronted a reading group with a book two years above their reading levels and seen them respond by growing rapidly as readers. When we expect greatness from our students, and support them on their path, we can see success that goes far beyond our initial impressions of their capabilities.

Education has been a passion of mine for quite some time. During college, I worked with Upward Bound – an incredible federal program that tutors and mentors high schoolers aspiring to be first generation college students. During my career, I’ve mentored students through several programs in the Greater New York Area. Whether it is as a tutor, coach or mentor – students have always been a part of my life as a professional and volunteer. My educational background is a BA in Political Psychology from Claremont McKenna College and an MA in Communications from Fairfield University. Written and verbal communication is a great strength of mine as both an academic and professional – English, History, the Social Sciences, etc. With that being said, I have worked with students of all ages on a variety of subjects. To me, mastery of a subject is a great accomplishment, but the greater goal should always be refining your broader skills as a student and scholar. These are the overarching characteristics that allow an individual to be adaptable and flourish in a variety of academic and professional environments. In my spare time, I like to stay active, travel and enjoy the outdoors.
I am currently a fourth grade teacher in Harlem. I live in Astoria, Queens. I have been teaching for five years and I am very passionate about teaching. I have taught math, reading, writing, science and social studies at the elementary level and am certified to teach special education as well.
Hello, I'm Bradley! I'm a recent Fairfield University graduate with a BA in History and minors in French and Philosophy. My teaching philosophy starts with understanding the student first then building a style around them. I've tutored French at university, taught French in France, and coached tennis to kids ages 8-15.
