I am a passionate educator who loves working with students who are struggling with mathematics, particularly at the middle school level.I was thirteen years old when I first discovered I wanted to be a teacher. I was not the best academically, but I was inspired by a teacher I had. He was funny, enthusiastic, caring, and engaging. I wanted to become a similar model for kids. In college, I spent much of my spare time tutoring middle school students in the area, and even college students in their math courses! I enjoy helping people understand things that seem foreign to them.

I believe we are born with a desire to learn and that, with the right light, we can each continue on that journey throughout or lives. No one person understands or internalizes each lesson in exactly the same way, although many of the basic principles are the bases for this understanding and future growth. It is here where we are charged to help others understand in a manner that best accommodates their learning, and then empower them with the tools (and desire) to seek out those answers on their own.

Everyone can learn, just not on the same day or in the same way. This quote by George Evans is the reason I became a teacher after obtaining my degree from the University of Northern Iowa. I did not have a traditional teaching background. I have been exposed to a variety of learning environments not only in the United States but around the world. I served a a civilian contracted worker with the U.S. military as I served in Japan and Germany. These experiences shape how I teach a variety of students. I choose to understand that student's were designed with creative minds as creative beings. The determent of any mind is not understanding the knowledge obtained. I believe that through knowledge we can overcome differences, expand our experiences, and create possibilities for future generations that we do not have today. I choose the serve my clientele by partnering in their learning. I am not their friend but I am an advocate and an ambassador to usher them into a positive learning experience. I love learning and continue to learn by finishing a degree in administration and supervision as well as educational technology. I have recently began focusing on health and fitness through the ministry of coaching so I have been afforded the opportunity to help start and athletic program. It is my desire to continue to use my teaching skills as I shift into this new role. My primary subject knowledge is in Kindergarten Readiness as the skills and knowledge needed for Kindergarten success has changed. While I can tutor in any elementary subject, I enjoy teaching math and science. In my free time I enjoy traveling, reading, fitness, coaching and sharing time with others close to me.

I think anyone can excel at any subject and the difference between understanding a subject and being totally lost is understanding the subject language. Math is about variables, chemistry about conversions and biology is Latin. Feel free to bring worksheets, study guides or a list of questions to our study sessions and I can help make biology, chemistry or genetics simple.

I received my undergraduate degree at the University of Northern Iowa in K-12 Spanish and K-12 TESOL. I have also received a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with an Emphasis in TESOL through Buena Vista University and a Master's Degree in Instructional Technology at the Univeristy of Northern Iowa. In between my two Master's degrees, I also obtained a reading/language arts endorsement at Drake Univeristy. I am in my 21st year of teaching. I taught elementary K-6 ESL for eight years before moving to the secondary level where I have taught grades 7-12. I currently teach high school ESOL for students in grades 10-12. I have also co-taught in several content classes. Most of my co-taught experiences are in English 2 (sophomore level), Biology, and English Concepts (an English class for at-risk or struggling students. For the past two and a half years, I have virtually taught English to students in China. I have also virtually tutored elementary, middle, and high school aged students in English and reading in other states in the US. I believe that every student can be successful in learning with the right tools and motivation. Students have individual needs and it is my job to help meet those needs; if they are struggling, then they are going to become disengaged and uninterested and learning will not occur. When I teach, my goal is to meet students where they are and give them the tools and motivation to learn. I also want to make learning relevant to students, especially with stuggling or disengaged students. When they can see the broader picture or can connect how the learning is, or will be, important to life after school, then they are more motivated to learn. I consider myself a life long learner. I tell my students that I learn from them as they learn from me. We learn together.

I am a graduate of The University of Northern Iowa. I received my Bachelor of Arts in History with a focus on European History. Since graduation I have had the opportunity to work in the Museum Field, focusing on education and programming. I've completed several research projects that were turned into published work on World War II and the Holocaust. I've also had the pleasure of tutoring off and on with students off all ages.
