My name is Paul, and I am currently pursuing my secondary education teaching license. My academic background is in history. I received my Bachelor's at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, and my Master's at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. Since graduation, I have worked for Cengage Learning and have substituted at both private and public schools in the Chicago area.I believe strongly in independent learning and in fostering a student's passion for knowledge. I graduated from Brandeis University with degrees in Classical Studies and Anthropology in 2012, and just received a master's degree in Archaeology from Bryn Mawr College. While in school, I have worked on numerous team projects as well as with younger students just beginning their studies. I spent this past summer working with high school students as a resident counselor at Johns Hopkins University. In the fall, I plan on working in classrooms in the Philadelphia area. I have experience across the humanities, and have a particular love for history. I enjoy tutoring because I love the chance to adapt to individual students' goals and learning styles. I've always enjoyed helping other people, whether it be through volunteering, donating, or in this case, tutoring! I am a physician and medical educator with extensive experience helping students prepare for exams, including certification exams, and completing course work in the health professions. I received my undergraduate degree in neuroscience and biology from Brandeis University in 2009 and my MD from Boston University in 2014. I matched into a competitive general surgery residency, but left to pursue teaching full time. Most of my time has been with paramedic students, but I've worked with students from all areas of medicine and outside medicine. What draws me to teaching is the opportunity to work closely with a student to build both their understanding of a subject and confidence in their abilities; nothing is as rewarding as that moment when a difficult subject "clicks" for a student! I primarily tutor in the life and biomedical sciences, and physiology is probably my favorite subject to teach (it's so complex and fascinating!), though I do love pharmacology and basic biology, as well. My philosophy as a teacher and tutor is that I'm a coach and facilitator: I help you build foundations and use the tools you already possess to deepen your understanding of a subject. We're very much a team, working together to reach your academic goals. Outside of academia, I enjoy running, going to the gym, baking, and reading/watching science fiction ("2001: A Space Odyssey" and "Contact" are tied for my favorite movie!).
