My name is Paul, and I am currently pursuing my secondary education teaching license. My academic background is in history. I received my Bachelor's at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, and my Master's at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. Since graduation, I have worked for Cengage Learning and have substituted at both private and public schools in the Chicago area.I believe strongly in independent learning and in fostering a student's passion for knowledge. I have experience tutoring Middle School algebra and leading English classes for adults, which greatly fortified my communication skills and strategies for engaging students and dissecting complex topics. I grew up being tutored by a number of tutoring centers so I know what makes a good tutor and what doesn't! My tutoring approach is student-centered and adaptable: I am perceptive to learning styles and learners' level of understanding. I like to tailor lessons to the learner's needs and am willing to go the extra mile to explain complicated topics. My goal is to be approachable and build a genuine connection with students, while challenging them to develop their skills to tackle new problems. Whether a student needs help mastering core concepts, staying organized, or preparing for quizzes and tests, I work to make learning clear, approachable, and rewarding.

I graduated from Brandeis University with degrees in Classical Studies and Anthropology in 2012, and just received a master's degree in Archaeology from Bryn Mawr College. While in school, I have worked on numerous team projects as well as with younger students just beginning their studies. I spent this past summer working with high school students as a resident counselor at Johns Hopkins University. In the fall, I plan on working in classrooms in the Philadelphia area. I have experience across the humanities, and have a particular love for history. I also understand the importance of preparing for standardized tests, and have found the same critical reading and writing skills needed to score well on them to be invaluable as my education has progressed.I look forward to working with and helping you in any way that I can.

I enjoy tutoring because I love the chance to adapt to individual students' goals and learning styles. I have a B.A with concentrations in history and political science and an MA in political science from Brandeis. I have also been a teaching assistant at Binghamton University in philosophy, where I gave one-on-one tips in both writing style and content area.My favorite subjects to tutor are history, English, literature, writing, philosophy, and SAT prep. I've always had a passion for narrative and communication, where these subjects in the humanities meet and form a core source of critical thinking skills that fuel inquiry and success in both higher education and life.In addition to teaching at Binghamton and taking on a number of private clients, I designed and taught college-level courses to high school students as part of MIT's Educational Studies Program. This program places undergraduate and post-college instructors with small classes of highly motivated students to tackle advanced subject matter. This gave me excellent experience in pedagogy and adaptive teaching.

BA Brandeis University • Doctor of Medicine, Alternative and Complementary Medicine and Medical Systems, General Boston University
1+ Years Tutoring

I am a physician and medical educator with extensive experience helping students prepare for exams, including certification exams, and completing course work in the health professions. I received my undergraduate degree in neuroscience and biology from Brandeis University in 2009 and my MD from Boston University in 2014. I matched into a competitive general surgery residency, but left to pursue teaching full time. Most of my time has been with paramedic students, but I've worked with students from all areas of medicine and outside medicine. What draws me to teaching is the opportunity to work closely with a student to build both their understanding of a subject and confidence in their abilities; nothing is as rewarding as that moment when a difficult subject "clicks" for a student! I primarily tutor in the life and biomedical sciences, and physiology is probably my favorite subject to teach (it's so complex and fascinating!), though I do love pharmacology and basic biology, as well. My philosophy as a teacher and tutor is that I'm a coach and facilitator: I help you build foundations and use the tools you already possess to deepen your understanding of a subject. We're very much a team, working together to reach your academic goals. Outside of academia, I enjoy running, going to the gym, baking, and reading/watching science fiction ("2001: A Space Odyssey" and "Contact" are tied for my favorite movie!).
