I graduated from Northern Arizona University with Bachelor's Degrees in Physics and Astronomy. Mathematics is an important part of both fields and my strong suit. Consequently, I have a minor in Mathematics that I have applied to my work on endless occasions. My math background encompasses basic subjects like algebra, geometry, and calculus up through advanced subjects such as linear algebra, multivariable calculus, differential equations, and advanced geometry. During my senior year I received a NASA Space Grant and began research with the U.S. Geological Survey Astrogeology Research Center in Flagstaff, AZ. This project eventually became my Master's Thesis.I graduated a second time from Northern Arizona University with a Master's Degree in Applied Physics. My research emphasis was planetary science, which allowed me to become very involved with the U.S.G.S. My planetary studies required me to not only focus on the physics of planets, but also on their geology. As such, I have a broad range of academic backgrounds, including astronomy, astrobiology, field geology, and geomorphology. I've even assisted in research at the Sudbury Impact Structure in Ontario, Canada and attended numerous scientific conferences.During my graduate studies I taught three different lab courses: Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism, and Life in the Universe. These were intended for non-physics-major students, so I have had extensive practice in bringing even the most advanced concepts down to a level that any student can understand. The lab courses were also relatively small (between 10 and 20 students). The small class sizes allowed me to learn to teach with hands-on methods as well as lecture-style methods, many times in a one-on-one setting.I love to teach, plain and simple. To witness a student truly understand a concept is very rewarding for both the student and the teacher. They say knowledge is power. Then to understand the universe (even just a small fraction of it) is power, indeed. SCIENCE!!!

I received my Bachelor of Arts from the University of Massachusetts Boston with a degree in Classics and graduated with honors and magna cum laude. I then obtained my Master of Arts from the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona in Classics with a focus on archaeology. I am currently mulling applying to law programs but I am going to take a few years off before I apply. During my college career, I have traveled to France, Britain, Italy, Greece, Egypt, Turkey, and would like to travel to many more countries! I tutored special needs students in Math, History and English during my time in high school. In my Master's program, I was a teaching assistant for four classes and mentored and helped many students of all different backgrounds for my entire two years there. In one specific case, I tutored a student in Ancient Greek for two to three a week for a semester.I can tutor in World History, European History, AP European and World History, Latin, all subjects of Writing including Grammar and Mechanics, and Public Speaking. Although I enjoy tutoring many subjects, European History is my favorite because I find it rewarding to show students how important past events still are to contemporary times. My methodology for tutoring is to help students identify answers that they can eliminate immediately and work together to find the right answer logically. I am patient teacher but I think the students benefits the most when they teach me the material because I can assess how comfortable the students are with the material and take the appropriate actions to help the students become more comfortable with the material. As for activities I find interesting, I play ice hockey regularly and follow all of the local sports teams. I played track and field and cross country in high school. While I like playing video games from time to time, I enjoy reading books of any topic (politics, sports, fiction, non-fiction, etc.) and watch many popular television shows. In general, I am a relaxed person who enjoys working with anyone willing to apply themselves.

I am a graduate of Maranatha Baptist University in Watertown, WI. I received my BS in Humanities Applied Science and a minor in Spanish. While at Maranatha, I participated in the ESL program as a personal teacher, tutored Spanish university students, and contributed to the Humanities blog. My teaching immersion experience in Peru enabled me to communicate with a variety of students, as well. While I love working with students on a wide range of subjects, my common study topics include Spanish, English, and Essay Writing. From my experience with Standardized Test Prep, I realize that approaching the test may seem daunting, yet I've found that a dose of dedication and light-heartedness is a powerful force. As an unrelenting optimist, I capitalize on students' strong points to build them up with encouragement so that they can reproduce the same effectiveness with their own capacities. As a lover of literature and language, I enjoy stumbling across creative, mind-provoking ideas.

I am very fond of the social sciences and I feel that is an area where I have a lot of strength in.My teaching philosophy/tutoring is that of openness of discussion. I don't really adhere to formal standards of teaching. I feel that teaching and/or tutoring is more effective when you can engage the audience first.I'm an open book and I always find that I am constantly learning and relearning about things I saw differently in the past. I love to read, to listen to different perspectives, and explore.

I got my start teaching as a high school senior, preparing freshmen to serve the elderly in a yearlong social action program. The summer before college, I tutored elementary school math one on one. I taught K-8 grade art after school during my final college year at a private school. With a bachelor's degree and graduate work in biology, I was a substitute teacher at a public charter school and research scientist. Now, I tutor elementary and middle school students ranging from special needs to gifted and talented across the country. In my initial session with students, I find out what they want to achieve during the instruction and their future goals. I use interactive visuals to connect what they learn in the classroom to the real world. Breaking down difficult material for clarity is what I enjoy doing most. Critical thinking and study skills are important, so I assist students with those items as well. Let me know how I can help you succeed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Varsity Tutors connects students across San Antonio's 42 school districts and 624 schools with personalized tutoring support. With over 333,000 students in the San Antonio area, we work with families from SAISD, North East ISD, Northside ISD, and other districts throughout the region to provide customized instruction that fits each student's unique needs.
Texas has specific learning standards across math, reading, science, and social studies that students must master at each grade level. Tutors work with San Antonio students to strengthen foundational skills, build confidence in tested subjects, and develop the critical thinking strategies needed to succeed on STAAR assessments and in the classroom. Personalized instruction allows tutors to focus on the exact areas where each student needs support.
San Antonio students frequently seek support in math (especially algebra and geometry), reading comprehension, and science—subjects that are heavily tested under Texas standards. Many students also benefit from tutoring in English language arts to strengthen writing skills, and in test preparation for STAAR, SAT, and ACT exams. Tutors can also help with Spanish language instruction, a valuable skill in San Antonio's diverse community.
With an average student-teacher ratio of 14.5:1 across San Antonio's school districts, classroom teachers often have limited time for individualized attention. Personalized 1-on-1 tutoring fills that gap by providing dedicated support focused entirely on a student's learning style, pace, and specific challenges—something that's difficult to achieve in a traditional classroom setting.
The first session is designed to build rapport and understand your student's goals, strengths, and areas for improvement. A tutor will assess your student's current knowledge in the subject, discuss what they're working on in school, and create a personalized plan for how tutoring can best support their learning. This foundation helps tutors tailor instruction to match your student's needs from day one.
Yes. While many San Antonio families connect with tutors for math, reading, and science support, tutors also help with subjects like social studies, foreign languages (including Spanish), test preparation, writing skills, and even study strategies. Whatever subject your student is taking in school, Varsity Tutors can help match them with a tutor who has expertise in that area.
San Antonio's 42 school districts each have their own curriculum frameworks and pacing guides, which is why personalized tutoring is so valuable. Tutors work with students from SAISD, North East ISD, Northside ISD, and other districts throughout the area and understand how to support students within their specific district's approach to learning. When you connect with a tutor, you can share details about your student's school and curriculum so instruction aligns perfectly.
Yes. Many San Antonio families use summer tutoring to help students maintain skills over the break, get ahead before the new school year, or catch up on concepts that were challenging during the year. Summer is also a great time for test prep (STAAR, SAT, ACT) or to build confidence in a subject before advancing to the next level. Tutors can work with your schedule to provide flexible support during the summer months.
