Ask the student what they need help with. If a deficiency in an area becomes apparent when answering, then I will lay a foundation by addressing the deficiency. If a problem is difficult for the student, I'll demonstrate the same concept using a simple example, and explain that the same procedure will work with the more complicated problem. How would you help a student stay motivated? Success is a great motivator, so showing a student that they can succeed will motivate them.
