I attended a French University and lived with several different French families. The methods I use when tutoring always depend on the student. In general, if I'm working with a student who already has some basis of a language, I would help them understand what they were learning, and, if time allowed, teach them other grammatical concepts. With adults who already have an understanding of the language, we would often read newspaper articles together and then have a discussion about that article during which I would correct their accent or grammar. For other students that had little knowledge of a language, I would develop my own course using a specific curriculum based on their level. Sometimes, speaking only the language to create an "immersion" aspect is very helpful. I can very easily adapt based on the needs of each individual student.
