I am an experienced and well-qualified essay coach, and a tutor in language arts and German. I also tutor students who are preparing for the SAT. I earned my B.A. in Comparative Literature from Columbia University and an M.A. in German from UC Berkeley, where I taught college German and received training in foreign language pedagogy. I am a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, where I earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. I've always loved Math and the Sciences: the hunt for the right equation to use, the unravelling of the mystery of the value of x. I want to show my students to see these subjects as I do: as a challenge, not a chore. I try to do this by making things simple and showing straightforward techniques that students can use on their own to sidestep mental walls, thus building confidence. I am a recent graduate from the University of Oregon. I graduated with a major in Biology and minors in Chemistry and Music Performance (piano). I'm 24 years old, and I live in Portland, Oregon. I currently work overnight at homeless shelters, and hope to tutor consistently in my spare time. I like to say that I teach "maieutically;" which comes from the Greek and means "to midwife, or aid in giving birth," in this sense, to an idea. This method results in what I like to call "intellectual exhilaration," in other words, the student is excited because they were able to create something out of themselves, instead of being imbued with the ideas of others something sort of rare for children, teens, and college students at times. I am currently a senior attending the University of Notre Dame, and I am pursuing a degree in the Program of Liberal Studies (PLS). PLS is a renowned Great Books program that aims to perfect the student's ability to think critically in a variety of disciplines, such as literature, philosophy, and history. In PLS, great emphasis is placed on formulating deep and effective arguments and presenting them clearly in a technically correct manner, both in class and through my written work. Consequently, I have had much practice writing and editing my own work as well as editing that of my classmates. I am also pursuing a minor in education and am seriously considering pursuing a career in the educational field after graduating. I am a graduate of Reed College with a degree in Classics. I came to Portland five years ago all the way from New York city and fell in love with the community and landscape of the Pacific Northwest. I worked as a peer tutor in high school and college, and have tutored English, Math, Reading, Writing, Attic Greek, Latin, and Humanities. I also spent five years as a Hebrew School teacher where I worked with elementary age children teaching basic Hebrew and Jewish studies. Hello! I've been a private tutor and writing coach for over five years for both teenagers and adults. My primary focus areas are: writing (academic, nonfiction and fiction), literacy, study skills/organization and academic/career planning I also specialize in the college application process, having helped hundreds of students through college essays and SAT prep. In college, I played two years of DIII lacrosse, sang in an a cappella group, studied abroad for a semester in Madrid, and was the co-chair of my major committee. With a faculty member in the physics department, I worked on a project analyzing the intersection of physics education, cognitive science, and contemplative practice (e.g., meditation). My senior thesis was a critical evaluation of the goals and results of neuroimaging studies purportedly studying "the self."

I am currently an undergraduate at the University of Southern California. I am majoring in Health and Human Sciences and minoring in Spanish, and am also on the pre-medical track. Growing up, I had difficulty in school understanding concepts in science, which originally dissuaded me from pursuing career in science. However, when I eventually found the right tutors, everything began to make sense to me and I realized how much I enjoyed learning when I could understand the material. It was empowering and I felt proud and confident in myself when the concepts started clicking. Because of my experiences, I decided to start tutoring to help others experience that feeling of finally understanding a tough concept. While I tutor a variety of different subjects, I've always been most passionate about concepts concering the NREMT, English, Spanish, and basic level mathematics. For the last four years, I've been tutoring a wide range of students, from elementary school kids to college students, and I absolutely love watching their level of understanding grow as they discover new concepts. I am a third-year Psychology major at Reed College in Portland, OR. I work as a researcher in a cognitive neuroscience lab studying human perception, and I am interested in pursuing a graduate degree in neuroscience. I am a recent college graduate with an interdisciplinary degree in History-Literature from Reed College. I graduated with academic commendations my last two years and won an award for my Senior thesis on artistic and literary resistance under Pinochet's dictatorial regime in Chile from 1973 to 1990. I have experience in essay editing, and am qualified to tutor in Humanities, English, and most areas of Western and Latin American History.
