Recent Salt Lake City Latin Tutoring Session Notes

Latin Tutoring review by Peter in Salt Lake City, UT
This session, the student and I covered the present and imperfect subjunctive. We also reviewed subjunctive forms of "esse" and purpose clauses with their characteristic "ut" and "ne" introductions. We discussed sequence of tenses and its importance in composing Latin from English. We began with single word examples from the subjunctive and then moved to translation of full sentences. He strongly grasped the concepts when we finished. The one area I would suggest further reviewing is the subjunctive of "esse." I suggest repeating it to yourself when going about everyday tasks until it sticks. Flashcards are also helpful. I sent him a review sheet for his test tomorrow which covers this and the other concepts we reviewed. Good luck and let me know if you have any further questions!

Latin Tutoring review by Amelia in Salt Lake City, UT
Today, the student and I worked through some Cicero orations, focusing on the translation process, the overall meaning, and identifying grammar constructions. This Latin is much more challenging than previous things she has read. I think that reading left-to-right, identifying structures and then trying to understand more fully on a second read is the best way to improve. Also, just re-reading text is a great way to improve; this is something that I think she has already been doing, which is great!

Latin Tutoring review by Erin in Salt Lake City, UT
This was an introductory session, so we discussed the student's online program and her concerns. She said that she is a few lessons behind because the translation exercises tend to take a long time for her to complete. We translated a few sentences from a past assignment, so I could assess her strategies. She has a strong grasp of the language and has a very good approach to translation. We moved on to an upcoming unit and worked through a few of the translation exercises. From this session, it seems that she is struggling a bit to recall verb conjugations. Once she had the verb correctly conjugated, she occasionally had difficulty placing it into the correct English tense. These are common problems even for students who have studied Latin much longer than she has, and can easily be improved with practice. I shared a website that will help her drill verb conjugations and recommended that she try to complete one exercise per day.

Latin Tutoring review by Roshan in Salt Lake City, UT
Today we went over the basic verbs some more (to be, to do, to have, to go) and practiced conjugating them using sentences. The student is learning slowly how to identify grammatical patterns and is showing a faster responsive time to get the answer right.

Latin Tutoring review by Kristen in Salt Lake City, UT
The student and I had our second session, and I prepared several activities to prepare him for his exam. We started by reviewing the main verbs that he will be tested on before working with the translation activities that he will have on his test. I can see that he understands the basics of conjugating, and he just needs consistent practice to reinforce the skills that he has learned. I gave him some additional practice sheets to look over before his exam tomorrow.

Latin Tutoring review by Abraham in Salt Lake City, UT
We reviewed the rules of passe compose and the role of participe pass and the verbs avoir and etre. Further explanations were provided to the student regarding those verbs that are irregular when it comes to their participe passe as well as those that must use etre because they are pronominal or reflexive. The tutor and student the practiced two dialogues using past tense. The first was for avoir and the second for etre. These role plays consisted of two students at a university in Paris talking about how their day was. Roles were reversed for tutor and student so she could go through all the text. The student was provided homework.
