How can a tutor help you master the PSAT?

The preliminary SAT, known as the PSAT, is meant to help students practice for the SAT. It also serves as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT). Because this test can result in a handsome scholarship, it is important that students perform well on the exam. Additionally, in order to get the most use out of the test, students should prepare for the exam in the same way they would prepare for the SAT. Having the help of a tutor who can guide your student through the PSAT prep could be helpful to students aiming for high scores. Varsity Tutors' educational directors can assist you in connecting with a Houston, Texas, PSAT tutor.

There are a few different versions of the PSAT, which includes: PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, and PSAT 8/9. The PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10 have the same content and are scored in the same way, but the PSAT 10 cannot be used for scholarship and is taken in the spring of tenth grade. The PSAT 8/9 is an entirely different exam that is used as a baseline for a student's progress. No matter which exam your student will be taking, being properly prepared may help reduce test anxiety on the big day. Personal Houston PSAT tutoring can give your student focused study that is centered around their needs. The exam evaluates students on two sections: evidence-based reading and writing, and math. If your child is particularly weak in one of these areas, then their tutor can focus on this skill during their time together.

Session Summaries by PSAT Tutors

PSAT Tutoring review by Courtney in Houston, TX
In our session today we focused primarily on the math section, but brought in a little reading toward the end. She has much less confidence in the math section than the reading. She has been doing better working through the problems to the best of her ability, rather than thinking she needs to do the complex mathematics sometimes demonstrated by the book. She continues to excel in the reading section, rarely missing any questions and doing an excellent job of approaching difficult problems.

PSAT Tutoring review by Kendra in Houston, TX
We started with a continuation of basic math facts, covering squares and square roots, fractional exponents, and dividing/multiplying with exponents, as well as Order of Operations. We then spent the next half hour reviewing vocabulary, while the last half hour was devoted to helping the student understand key concepts in Algebra II that she will put to use on her next test. These same concepts also come into play on the test, such as finding the slope of a line, finding the rate of change, and converting line equations from point-slope to slope-intercept form and vice versa. Our next meeting will be next Wednesday, September 4th, as Abby requested we take Labor Day off. We will be making up this session next Thursday, September 5th.

PSAT Tutoring review by Chloe in Houston, TX
The student hadn't taken the test before or done any diagnostics so I had her complete some problems in her book. She definitely has the potential to do well, especially on the verbal. We'll review math more, concentrating on reading the questions carefully. This week, the student will take a diagnostic test, make some flashcards, and keep reading classic fiction -- that's really the best way to prepare for the passages!
