Lewisville, TX Physics tutoring
Today we covered electrochemistry, SI units, significant figures in calculations, solubility equilibria, and redox reactions. We also did 7 questions from the AP chemistry exam. We will be doing these questions every session in preparation of his exam the first week of May. I also gave him a quiz in the beginning of class to evaluate whether or not the material from the last session was retained. He did well, only missing 2 of the 20 questions.

The student and I reviewed acid-base reactions and buffers in our session. We used her worksheet, 4.1.7, to review concepts including: determining the stronger acid/base using bond length and electronegativity, calculating the pH of an acid solution, and showing the difference in dissociation of weak acids versus strong acids using the particle model. I also gave her an introduction to buffers, e.g. how to make them, what the they do, and important concepts pertaining to them. We will continue to review buffers in our next session as well as begin to review questions specific to the AP Exam.

Today the student wanted to go over redox reactions and redox reaction problems. We began by discussing the differences between electrolytic and voltaic cells. After that, we went over her old redox exam, which included simple problems on her exam over the topics of oxidation numbers, oxidizing and reducing agents, use of reduction potentials, and spontaneity of reactions. We went over oxidation states and related them to the concept of electronegativity. She is now comfortable with calculating oxidation states and using them to solve redox problems.

In Today's session we covered topics encompassed by thermodynamics, such as spontaneity, entropy, and free energy. We spent most of the time going over practice problems in her text book, and I would explain concepts related to the equations needed to solve them. At the end of the session I asked her to continue on the challenge problems to get extra practice, since she has an upcoming exam on the topic on Tuesday. I feel she is a quick learner and very focused.

We covered a lesson on chemical formulas (balancing, nomenclature, types of reactions and predicting products of reactions). I left him with homework of reviewing his polyatomic ions (quiz first thing next session) and doing the problems in Section 5 of his AP Chemistry practice booklet on chemical equations.
