If there is one thing I can say about myself, it is that I am passionate about knowledge - both acquiring it and imparting it. I have served extensively as a teacher and tutor in the classroom, in one-on-one or small group settings, and even abroad. I went to a private liberal arts school for my undergraduate degree, where I learned the value of a well-rounded, dynamic educational approach which I bring to all of my studies and teaching. I have taught and researched in a range of areas but for the last three years, my particular focus has been on Classics, Archaeology and Foreign Languages at the University of Texas at Austin as a graduate student. Reading and language acquisition are two of my strongest assets, primarily working in English, Greek and Latin, but also with reading fluency in four additional languages. I have traveled extensively in Europe, as an archaeologist and for my own curiosity, and I am enthusiastic about the influence of culture of learning, expression, and history. I have always had a knack for mathematics and was originally on track to be a chemist, both of which have served me well in my pursuits as an archaeologist and my work on various National Science Foundation grants. I have taught in educational settings up to and including the undergraduate level, and I look forward to finding just the right approach with each individual student because one size does not always fit all.

I took up languages, fiction, and poetry. Latin has since become one of my favorite subjects and I am passionate about showing students why it remains so important. I seek left/right brain balance in my life and I believe many of the challenges we face today as a society will require a balanced approach. We need logic and analysis, we need technology, but we also need the humanities. A proficiency in Latin unlocks the literature of the Roman people, one of the most precious treasures our ancestors have passed down to us. I want to explore it with others.

I have always a passion for curiosity. The buzzword "lifelong learner" has been around the education world for quite some time. But I want to have a lifelong curiosity. I always want to know things work and how to better understand things. I bring that same passion for curiosity to everything that I do, especially teaching and tutoring. Nothing brings me greater joy than being able to bring someone closer to their capability. My biggest teaching motto has been: "I don't teach based on what I know my students can already. I teach based on where I know they are capable of going and what they are capable of doing." I believe that people should always strive to know more. Curiosity makes the world a better and, frankly, a more fun place. If I can instill that lifelong curiosity into even one of my students, I would have reached success.I also firmly believe that conversation is a huge part of a successful teaching/learning process. No one knows how the students learn better than the students themselves. I constantly check in with how students are doing, often before I tell them how I think they are doing. This constantly dialogue allows us to form a better connection and does nothing but allow me to teach and the student learn better. I want to know their goals, interests, hobbies, learning styles, and anything and everything in between. This process is not a dictatorship but a partnership.I look forward to getting know my students and helping them on their educational journey!!!!

In an educational climate increasingly reliant on the power of the scantron, I believe that learning should exist beyond the small, graphite-dark bubbles that are as dull as the knowledge they are supposedly able to convey is exciting. I'm an electrical engineering major at Brown University with interests in neuroscience, linguistics, and robotics, among other things. I've always loved learning, and my curiosity has led me through numerous subject areas. I constantly seek to apply my classroom learning in practical situations. For example, I have conducted research on dementia using electrophysiology in a mollusk model. I participate in hackathons and robotics challenges that test not only my programming ability but also my hardware skills as a tinkerer. My engineering pursuits require a strong foundation in mathematics, my interest in the life sciences calls for a myriad of memorization techniques, and my participation in the academic world at large reminds me daily of the importance of sharp writing skills. I hope to share some of these things, both content and technique, with my students. Though I will make sure that they can come away from each session armed with the skills needed to take on the modern education system, I also hope that they will take with them some appreciation for learning itself.

I peer tutored in all four years of high school in various levels of mathematics, biology, and Latin. Now, at my college I am a Learning Assistant for undergraduate multivariable calculus students and elementary Italian students. I have the most fun leading small group study sessions before exams, where we fine-tune the skills and study habits necessary to succeed on upcoming assessments.
